Giants keen to continue streak

The SKILLED Goldfields Giants have shown they fear no team after upsetting two State Basketball League championship contenders in as many weeks, according to head coach Wayne Creek.

The Giants are on a five-game winning streak after Saturday’s 91-88 victory over a highly-touted East Perth which included a gigantic frontline in Sam Harris, Tom Jervis and Paul Rogers, all of whom stand above seven-feet tall in the old scale.

“I think the taller you are, the lazier you get,” said Creek, a 312-game veteran who at 204cm is no slouch.

“You don’t have to do as much because you’re that much taller and it’s also a challenge because you’re shorter so you work that much harder.

“Yes, it is hard work playing against these guys but they are human and they can be beaten.”

Saturday’s victory followed the Giants’ road triumph the previous weekend against Geraldton, where they have won just eight times in 27 trips since 1990.

It also enabled the Giants to move into third spot on the SBL ladder with an impressive 8-3 win-loss record.

“The guys have really worked over the last month to be in this place,” Creek said.

“There have been some tough wins on the road and the guys are just hoping to keep building each week.”

Creek singled out forward Lordan Franich (17 points and 13 rebounds) and American import John Vaudreuil (15 points and eight rebounds) for showing aggressive intent early against the Eagles.

“Lordan really stepped up his game offensively – he’s been working on a few things and one of those is being aggressive,” Creek said.

“He went out and really went after it. “We get a lot of work out of John (Vaudreuil) each week and he played against three seven footers and we came out on top.”

Two-time Most Valuable Player Michael Haney became just the third import in Giants history on Saturday to play 100 games for the club, behind Calvin (Doc) Earl and Brian Tudman. Haney is averaging 15 points and 8.6 rebounds per game this season.

“Mike’s a quality player and one of the smartest players we’ve ever had in terms of imports,” Creek said.

“For an American to keep coming back year after year it’s a testament to him as a player and his character on and off the court.

“Mike’s well liked by a lot of fans and he’s a great guy to have around the club. “He’s our barometer – when he’s working hard, we work and play hard together.”

The Giants face another stern test when they take on Franich’s old club Lakeside at Kalgoorlie’s Neils Hansen Basketball Stadium next Saturday.
