Courts get a face lift

The biggest sport in Alice Springs and the Games, the existing courts were well worn, so much so that old bitumen was exposed in places. The courts underwent major resurfacing works, resulting in a new synthetic surface that could last up to ten years.  Netball Sports Coordinator Michele Turk said that the approach of the Games in October made the upgrade a priority, even though it put a halt to local competition for six weeks.

“It was really important that the courts were completed for the Games, because it’s the biggest competition that Alice Springs Netball sees besides our local comp,” said Ms Turk.

“The courts were given a complete makeover. They were stripped right back to the bitumen and rebuilt with distinguishable colours so as to easily define the playing area from the surrounds.”

After the first week of competition on the new courts, local players were very impressed with the new surface, and Ms Turk is looking forward to seeing how Masters Netball competitors like it.

“It has even been said that there is some ‘spring’ in the courts now – I can only imagine this will help the Masters competitors, especially towards the end of a long week!” said Ms Turk.

The Alice Springs Town Council oversaw these works, with the total upgrade almost complete. Still to come is a brand new bar and barbeque area being built to meet the needs of the Games week.
