The Youth Olympic Qualifier began today in Port Vila in 29 degrees heat and with 75% humidity. Hockey5s is played in 3 periods of 12 minutes. Fiji started strongly and defended well in the first third and it took awhile for New Zealand to settle in to the requirements of this new game. It was the 6th minute that Bridget Kiddle scored the first goal field goal for New Zealand.

The Oceania Youth Olympic Games Qualifier in Port Vila Vanuatu is now only 2 weeks away. The format is Hockey5s which is the new FIH smaller game. The game is played on a pitch that is 55 metres long and 41.70 metres wide. Goals can be scored from anywhere on the pitch so it should provide a fast moving spectacle with lots of goals!!

Samoa Women won the Bronze medal in a 3rd place playoff match set up by Oceania Hockey after the end of Women’s FIH World League Round 1. Fapene Malu scored the 2-1 Golden Goal against Vanuatu to secure Samoa's first-ever medal. This result also meant Samoa finishing 5th ahead of Vanuatu in this OPC edition.

It was hugely disappointing for Samoa Men that they had to withdraw on Tuesday evening from competing at the FIH World League RD 1 and OPC Tournaments. This was due to transportation difficulties and so it was decided by the Samoa Hockey Federation just to send the Women's team.
