GUADALCANAL and MALAITA REGIONS ON TOP AT SOLOMON GAMES

Guadalcanal Men and Malaita Women won the finals in the Solomon Games Hockey Competition.
Guadalcanal was the dominant men's team throughout the competition but Choisel, their opposition, had narrowly beaten them in the pool play. This was the wake up that they needed and were convincing 3-0 winners in the final.

SOLOMON ISLAND GAMES GREAT SUCCESS

Hockey was involved in the 2016 Solomon Games, after many years of inactivity. Hockey5s was the competition format and 10 teams were entered representing 6 regions - Choisel, Guadalcanal, Honiara City, Malaita, Rebel and TeMotu. 6 teams played in the Men's section and 4 in the Women's.

RESULTS FROM FIH WORLD LEAGUE RD 1 SUVA, FIJI

At the conclusion of the Men's final a comprehensive prize giving occurred in which all participating teams and officials took part. The World League Qualification process had been completed in the morning with Fiji Men confirming their right to go to World League Rd 2 alongside the Women who completed their campaign on the Friday. Oceania HF put in a medal round to complete the tournament.

FIJI MEN QUALIFY TO WORLD LEAGUE RD 2

Fiji Men qualified as the top Men's team in World League Rd 1 and now go forward to represent Oceania at World League Rd 2 in 2017. Hopefully the longer lead in time will provide enough preparation and selection time for the team as it transitions back to 11 aside and also to gain the necessary funding to support the campaign.

Tonga Men won their first international match yesterday against Solomon Islands Men.
Tonga have shown significant improvement in every match which culminated in the win. The match was evenly contested with both teams having sustained periods of attack.

The FIH World League RD 1 in Suva Fiji was started with a magnificent opening ceremony for the participating teams and officials. This created a special atmosphere that was more like what is expected at the end of the tournament and so it augers well for an exciting competition but friendly games.

Dashiell Hewett, a Northern Territory representative hockey player has been appointed to Vanuatu, through the Australian Volunteers for International Development (AVID). He is part of the staff of Wan Smolbag. This is a magnificent non-government organisation that started in 1989, primarily based around a theatre group.

The Oceania Hockey Federation's Annual General Meeting for 2016 wil be held in conjunction with the Junior World Cup qualifier on the Gold Coast.

This will be held on Saturday 23rd January but the venue is still to be confirmed.

All member nations will be invited to send a delegate to this meeting.

PACIFIC GAMES HOCKEY 5s TEST EVENT 13 JUNE

The new artificial hockey surface at the Sir Roger Guise Hockey Centre was officially handed over the week before the test event. It was exciting as the water was turned onto the pitch for the first time as this was a very new experience for both the Papua New Guinea players and spectators.
