Invacare Challenge Cup
As part on Ireland’s preparation for the European B Championships in Sarajevo, Bosnia Herzegovina, we're delighted to announce the inaugural Invacare Challenge Cup this weekend where the Ireland Senior Mens team will take on the Great Britain Junior Mens team in a series of games. With the main game taking place on Saturday night at 18:00 in the IWA Sport Hall, Clontarf, Dublin.
The GB Junior Mens team is the stepping stone for players who aspire to represent Great Britain at the highest level such as the Paralympics and World Championships. The team that was announced this week to represent Great Britain at the Paralympics in Rio contains players who would have played for the GB Junior Mens Team over the last number of years, most notably Harry Brown who is 21 and has been playing internationally since he was 15. The youngest player to ever be selected to represent the GB Men’s Senior Team when he made his debut at the BT Paralympic World Cup in 2011.
The fact that we can attract teams such as the GB Junior Mens team to come play the Irish Team is acknowledgement of just how far the Irish Team and the Irish League has come on in the last few years. After a number of years out of the International scene, The Irish Team finished a credible 4th in the European C Championships in Lisbon, Portugal last year and as a result got invited to the European B Championships in Sarajevo, Bosnia Herzegovina in July. The Team and the Irish League are developing at a great pace and our junior programme is progressing as well with a lot of very good players coming up through the ranks with a number of them expected to play in the senior League next season,
While the games in Bosnia will be streamed live, the game on Saturday @ 18:00 will be an opportunity to see the Irish Team in the flesh as they test their skills against GB’s up and comings stars. It will also give our supporters an opportunity to see the Wheels in Green before they head off to the Euros. So why not come down to the IWA in Clontarf on Saturday and show your support for the team and enjoy a great game of basketball as well.
