BOMI 13th Ralik Ratak Shootout Basketball Tournament

On September 20, 2013 The 13th BOMI Ralik Ratak Shootout Invitational Tournament kicked off and ran all the way through October 7, 2013. This year's tournament was really exciting because we had teams from Nauru and Pohnpei joining in the tournament. Nauru's women did great, taking 1st place for the women competition. Majuro's mens team were the champions in their category.more

Team Majuro wins 3-on-3 tournament

Team Majuro and Team Jetang played to a nail-bitting conclusion in the championship game of the first 3-on-3 tournament of 2013 on January 9 at the CMI court. The final score: Majuro 17-Jetang 15. 16 teams competed in the tournament organized by MIBF, NOC and the US Embassy with support from Internal Affairs and CMI. See photo gallery at right.

Coach Newell's Majuro visit ends on high note

Coach Tom Newell wrapped up his week-long visit to Majuro January 9 with a two-hour program at Majuro Middle School, a talk to Majuro Cooperative High School students, and the first 3-on-3 basketball tournament of 2013. The day ended with dinner at Ambassador Armbruster's residence. He departs to Kwajalein Thursday.

Sponsors are lining up to support prizes for the 3-on-3 basketball tournament on Wednesday January 9 in Majuro. It is part of the program for former NBA Coach Tom Newell. 16 men's teams will compete, and US Ambassador Tom Armbruster is organizing a US Embassy team to join the competition.

Level 2 Coach Training in high gear

The first-ever Basketball Coach Level 2 training to be held in the Marshall Islands completed its second full-day on Saturday January 5, 2013 with 13 coaches in attendance. The training is being led by Coach Tom Newell, a former NBA coach, who is sponsored by the US State Department's Sports Ambassador program.

Shortly after being greeted by US Ambassador Tom Armbruster, Coach Newell's first order of business was a courtesy call on Marshall Islands President Christopher Loeak. Former NBA coach coming to RMI in January

A former NBA coach will be coming to Majuro and Ebeye in early January to run basketball clinics and speak to local students about the value of sports. Tom Newell, who was an assistant coach with the Seattle Supersonics, New Jersey Nets and the Dallas Mavericks, will visit the RMI from January 3-14. He is sponsored by the US State Department’s Sports Ambassador program.

Close games highlighted the men's BOMI 12th Ralik Ratak Shootout Basketball Tournament opening round playoff games Thursday night in Majuro. Pool A winner Lae survived a scare from Mejit, Namu held on to defeat Wotje, Maloelap lost an 18 point lead, but managed to beat Likiep by three, and Rongelap-Arno went to final seconds before Rongelap emerged victorious.

Team Mejit men is playoff bound after defeating Majuro Monday night, December 17, 2012 in BOMI 12th Ralik Ratak Shootout Invitational Basketball Tournament action. In the women's bracket, Arno defeated Mejit and Majuro dropped Lae so Arno and Majuro will meet in the women's championship game Friday, while Mejit and Lae will face off for third on Thursday.

CMI court could get US-provided roof in 2013

The RMI government and the United States Pacific Command have listed as a priority the construction of a roof to cover the College of the Marshall Islands sports court. This is the top item on a list of eight construction projects under consideration for the US Civic Construction Action Detail and the Pacific Partnership 2013 engineering projects.

Japan offers to fund ECC renovation, but RMI must prioritize project

After extensive review of the ECC gym in Majuro, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has provided the RMI government with a road map for requesting assistance from the government of Japan to fix the gym, which has been closed for 18 months. JICA said it is waiting for the RMI's application so that the ECC can be processed for the coming fiscal year.

First women's coaching clinic launched in Majuro

Australian Institute of Sport Coach Paul Goriss is leading the first clinic program for women coaches in the Marshall Islands, which started on November 16, 2012 in Majuro. The ground-breaking clinic is four days of four-hour-per-day intensive classroom sessions coupled with on-court practical work. MIBF Annual General Meeting elects officers 2012-2014

The Marshall Islands Basketball Federation held its Annual General Meeting on April 19, 2012. MIBF makes shoe donations to schools, NGO

The Marshall Islands Basketball Federation is partnering with the Missouri-based Soul to Sole ministry for sports shoe donations in the Marshall Islands. Since 2009, Soul to Sole has organized the donation of hundreds of sports shoes and socks, shipping them to MIBF, which in turn has made donations to local schools and non-government organizations to encourage girls and women to play basketball and exercise.

Ebeye volunteers renovate full court

How sweet it is

For Head Coach Paul Kattil and assistant coaches Robert Pinho and Alber Alik, the gold medal finish for their 15-and-under Marshall Islands basketball team at the Pohnpei tournament was especially sweet, coming 17 years after their first appearance as national team players on the RMI national team that competed in the Micronesian Games in Guam.

Three RMI standout players were recognized at the 15-and-Under Micronesia Basketball Tournament in Pohnpei, July 8-14, 2011. Kyle 'Bollet' Paul was chosen as MVP for his stellar play in the low post that helped the RMI to the championship. Mouj Lewi is the first National Basketball Development Officer in the Marshall Islands.
