Attracting audiences for local basketball
Hi,

Has anyone got any suggestions to create a good atmosphere at the mens and womens State League (NSW regional) basketball matches. How to attract an audience is a problem as well. What about promotion of the players and the league by way of clinics etc..

Does anyone use court announcers and have music like the NBL games, or is it pretty much let the players provide the entertainment.

Does half time entertainment work. Dancers or a game of mini-ball?

Our season is just about to start, and something fresh would be good for our association. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Hi Ned,
Good question...
We'd be happy to help promote any events on the SportingPulse home page and discuss ways of communicating with a potential ausdience through the website and mySport.
Local media could be an option, but you would have to come up with something newsworthy that interests them.
I’m sure there are more mySporters out there who could give you feedback on player clinics and entertainment at games...

RE: Attracting audiences for local basketball
NEd, We do a range of things.

Publicity - Sponsorship from regional TV & Radio & local newspaper. This includes a range of adverts that say proudly supported by each media outlet.

We run half time shoot outs. In the past this has been select 5 people, who are elimated via foul shots. When 1 remains tehy shoot from half court for $500 (or similiar) - It has been one 3 times in about 5 years. Most recently we raffle this as one of many prizes.

We also now have sponsorship from a local shopping centre and we have shopping trolleys set up at 3/4 time. People shot from half court to trolleys at 3pt line, foul line and under basket. Win prizes for each 1, starting at the closest.

Have also seen comps where kids take of there shoes, pacing them in the centre and then run from baseline - first to put them on and done up (can be dangerous if mixed ages).

Also just done the old foul line elimination, just to get children involved and active at half-time.

RE: Attracting audiences for local basketball
Hi Mate

Here in WA there are a range of things that local clubs do. When I was involved at the club level we had a sponsorship with the local paper who did colour adverts for us as well as editorials each week. We ran some discount offers in there which can work.

The most important thing is to attack the grassroots of the association. Have players involved at junior level so that kids want to come and see their coaches play. Hand out tickets at the junior games on a Saturday morning. If you have imports its best to get them to do this as the kids love the Americans.

In terms of entertainment some associations here do the half court shootout. A couple have sponsorships with local dance schools for cheerleaders which works. Entertainment is an area that either requires a good court announcer or someone to organise in advance.

Court announcers are the most important part of building a great atmosphere once you get people there. Need someone who really can get the crowd pumped up with good music, sound effects and chants, etc.

Maybe get around to some games close by and see what they do that works.

Even use your sportingpulse database and send out some group emails to all junior members or mysport members.

Hope this helps mate.
