ARLD - 'Feet on the Ground' great success!
ARLD National Development Officer - Steve Belsham who is based on the Sunshine Coast and South Burnett has outlined the great success of his 'Feet on the Ground' project!
'The aim of the FotG is to get more development officers out in the field teacher our young boys and girls about our great game. To achieve this we have entered into a partnership between local league clubs, both junior and senior and the ARL Development. This gives the local clubs ownership over the development of young talent in their areas, especially in the schools which is sometimes hard for clubs to get to. The combined funds allows me to employ more development officers, mainly trainees from both secondary and tertiary levels, which as a result has allow Rugby League to massively increase the contacts possible with young boys and girls!'
The Sunshine Coast is an example of the increase of staffing - we have gone from 2 staff to 8 trainees (secondary - 2 Noosa, 1 Nambour, 2 Caloundra, 1 Kawana, 2 Maroochydore), 4 university and 3 senior staff members. In the past month this has allow nearly 10000 contacts in the southern Wide Bay region.
The Burnett region has also received an additional 5 staff!
The clubs provide $200.00 each to the program and this is matched $ for $ by the ARL Foundation!
Well done all involved!!

International favour to SCGRL for season 2009!
The SCGRL will have a distinct international favour to it this year with several clubs have significant influxes of oversea players!
The Gympie Devils have recruited from the 'Old Dart' and across the Tasman in an attempt to reach their first semifinals in many years.
From England, the Devils are signed 3 players from the Rugby League Strong hold of Warrington Wizards;
Matt Wilson: Frontrow/Backrow
Jono Smith: Backrow/Hooker
Danny Shaw: Centre/Wing
Gympie club stalwart Bob Leitch said 'All are fitting in very well, with Matt being a mentor for his fellow Poms and also to the locals! While Jono is a bit of a larrikin and Danny has taken on the role of social director!!'
'The players are enjoying their company, and this has seen a significant rise in the club spirit!
The Pommy boys have been working on their tans and had a great time at the footy last weeken
We have bacon butties after training, not sausage sizzle! Apparently an english tradition?''
From across the ditch - Grayson Putu has arrived from Wellington, who is a half-back.
Bob outlined that Grayson is living with the Poms at the Golf Course and is respsonsible for the day to day cleaning of unit, a busy job looking after our English cousins!!
These 4 players and the remainder of the Gympie Devils squad will get their chance to show their wears at the 2009 Wide Bay Challenge at Maroochydore on 28-29th November!

NRL Trial - why we need at stadium!!
Saturday's sell out NRL Trial was proof that the Sunshine Coast needs at Stadium that seats more then 10000 and it needs it yesterday!
After what was an exciting day for all sports fans, the main attraction at Stockland Stadium had over 8000 fans jammed into a temporarially erected grandstands for what is one of the premium sporting events on the coast for 2009.
Several key factors can not be denied;
1. Over 8000 people crammed into Stockland Stadium paying a premium price - the fan base is here!
2. The field was rectangular - a key factor if the Sunshine Coast is going to have any chance of attracting top line acts in R. League, R. Union or Soccer!
A great day for the coast - hopefully it has produced the impedus to get the sporting facility the coast requires!!

Noosa look the goods for season 2009!
The Pirates have already put their best foot forward to accompolish an unprecedented 4 title in a row by their early season form!
The Pirates 2 weeks ago travelled to Bundaberg to compete and win the Brothers Challenge. Clubs from all over south and central Queensland competed. The Pirates took the title by defeating Gladstone Brothers 5 tries to nil.
Also to complete their preparation to the season which could put them in the record books - Noosa performed admirably in a trial against FOGS club Western Districts. The Pirates went down 32-0 but were for the majority of the game were competitive against their more accomplished cousions.
2009 - will be a great year for the Pirates chasing that 4 title!

Bellamy B'Fest a success!
Melbourne Storm and NSW Origin coach Craig Bellamy won over some new fans on Saturday morning when he was guest speaker at Caloundra RSL in front of 70 local league coaches and administrators.
A big thank you to Craig who took 3 hours out of his busy schedule especially on game day. His presentation was brillant and all left with not only a greater appreciation of what is required to be a top performing coach, but the man himself.

Footy Fest - great day for Footy on the coast!!
Yesterday's footy fest was a great day for Rugby League on the Sunshine Coast - with over 8100 people in attendence.
In the early games, with only the mum's and Dad's at the ground the future of coast RL looks in save hands.
In the first game of the day - Sunshine Coast Black and Gold under 15's showed that next year's under 16 Falcon team will have some good cattle to choose from with a exciting, skillful game on show.
For the record - Gold won 14-12.
Mt Creek was also on the card and their year 9's put in a great performance to defeat last year's Grand Finalists Wavell High from Brisbane. The 'Creek's' RL program looks very healthy with a great allround performance by their young chargers.

Under 18's continue to shine, U 16's go down on the bell!!
The SC Falcon's Under 16's felt the heartache of playing in a higher level competition yesterday when they went down to Redcliffe at Dolphin Park 22-18.
The young Sunshine Coast team had lead for the majority of the game only to lose with a converted try under the posts on the last tackle of the match!
The Falcons started impressively, skipping out to a 10-0 lead and went into 1/2 time in front 10-8.
The red and whites came out firing after the break and got their noses in front 12-8 after scoring in the first 5 mins.
S. Coast hit back with 2 tries to attain what was thought to be a match winning lead only to have the Dolphins score consecutive tries in the last few minutes.
The young Falcons, on a steep learning curve in this competition will take alot from the game - especially to play till the final whistle.
The under 18's were again impressive with a comprehensive 40-20 victory.
Unlike last week, the Falcons were not out of the blocks as quick as the opposition, conceeding a try after only 2 minutes. But this was the only time they were headed.
The coast boys hit back well via a neat backline move, finished off by man of the match Sam Hambley.
Sunshine Coast went into the break leading 18-6.
In the second half the Redcliffe boysprovide tough resistence at times and to the Falcons credit they lifted when required.
Final score of 40-20, didn't reflect the Falcon's dominance with Redcliffe scoring too late tries.
Another strong preformer for the Coast boys was hooker Blake Harvey who was dangerous out of dummy half all day and scored a sensational solo try from 30 m to put the game out of the red and white's hands.
Both sides have the week off before returning to home at Stockland Park - Kawana to take on Brisbane heavyweights Norths on Saturday 14th March.

Falcons take on Redcliffe!
Round 2 of the Cyril Connell and Mal Meninga Cup presents a new challenge for the young Sunshine Coast outfit. Up against one of Qld icon clubs the Falcons will have to continue to improve on their early season good form.
Played at Dolphin Oval this Saturday at 4.30 pm (U16) and 6.00 pm (U18), the players are very aware that this weekend will be harder then last weeks clash.
Ball security will be paramount with the Brisbane outfits already proving they been on the training park several months longer then their bush cousins.
Redcliffe last week were defeated in both age groups, while the Falcons were convincing winners over Wynumm.

Sunshine Coast too strong for Wynumm!
Sunshine Coast Falcons under16 & under 18 teams prove far too good for their Brisbane counterparts on Saturday night at Wises Rd, Maroochydore.
Under 16's started the campaign with a solid 1st half, with good ball control and field position which they converted into a 12-4 half time lead. The young Falcon's bombed several chances but they put themselved in the right position repeatedly!
The second half degenerated with a lack of ball control from both teams and the Sunshine Coast boys lost their way for the major of the half but showed great composure and eventually hit their straps to score two late tries to finish winners 22-4.
Several good performances, but the stand outs were Maroochydore's front rower Tom Gerherty and 5/8 Sam Cummerford.
Under 18's were on fire from the opening whistle, running in numerous tries to take a match winning 26-0 lead after 25 minutes. From here the Falcon's never headed and they continued in the second stanza to run out eventual winners 36-6.
Stand out was 5/8 Jordan Meads who scored a hat trick and controlled most of the attack and was devasting in defence!
Like their younger counterparts, the senior team's second half was not as good as their first but like the under 16's their defence was relentless. Both coaches, like their young chargers will take alot from their first game, least of all that their players protect their line with pride.
Next week the Falcon's travel to Redcliffe for what will be a bigger test against one of Queensland's premier clubs!!

Sirens have open training this Tuesday!!
The Sunshine Coast Sirens will again contest the Brisbane Womens Rugby League Competion in 2009. The ladies have started training at Maroochydore JRLFC on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6pm and have already have six weeks of training and fitness under their belt under the guidance of a new coaching staff.
Having just missed out on the finals last year and having once during the season beaten the eventual Grand Final winners, 2009 is seen as a further learning and expanding year under new coach, Chris Little and Assistant Coach, Glenn Peatling.
Numbers at training have been down slightly and it is hoped that more ladies are just around the corner from turning up to sign and play in what should be an exciting year. With Stephanie Hancock retiring from football after the Women's World Cup and Terri Aiton recouperating from off season knee surgery the Sirens will look to the experience of their other 2008 Australian & World Cup Represresentative ,Tarah Westerah and 2000 Olympics Judo Representive, Nat Jenkinson for on field leadership.
With many keen and exciting young players from last year returning it is believed that the Sirens can better the results of 2008 and push not only for a finals birth but top honours. The Sirens have their first trail match on Saturday the 7th of March 2009 at Caloundra against a newly formed Caboolture Womens Team.
Interested players and the media are invited to attend training at 6pm, Wises Rd, Maroochydore on Tuesday the 17th of February 2009 for training and can contact the coaching staff for more information on:

Palmwoods up and running after 24 years!!
The Palmwoods Devils are back in the senior league in a big way with both an under 18 & C Grade teams slated for season 2009.
Palmwoods Rugby League Club Makes History!!
This year our club will make history reentering a C Grade team back in the comp. & our first U/18s for 24 years. The whole community is excited about the prospect of being able to watch their local team play again & we expect huge crowds cheering on the Devils at Briggs Park this year. A spokesman for the club & President Alan Mewton expects the club to go ahead in leaps & bounds again now that our U/18s & C Grade have reentered the Senior Comp. We are a team steeped in history having four ex. players named in the team of the Century for the Sunshine Coast & one ex. player named in the Team of Century for Australia. It just shows that you can be successful coming from a small club like Palmwoods.
Palmwoods had a great team back in the 1930s where we won the comp. but unfortunately disbanded until 1972 where we formed again & played at the Sports Ground in Palmwoods, folding again in 1984 where we were based at Briggs Park. Our Juniors reformed in 1998 & now can boast close on 200 players.
Four of our C Grade players went over to Kilcoy on Sunday to take on the best South East Queensland could throw at us & for a small club probably can claim second in the(unofficial) club title only behind the Gold Coast Titans in the Kilcoy Gift. The four players Billy Mewton, Billy Featherby, Mykel Ward & Ben Ayton (pictured) took on the big guns the Broncos, Sea Eagles, Redcliffe, Wynnan, Burleigh Heads & a host of other clubs .
In the sprint relay of 120ms we were pipped by the Broncos, unfortunately pushing us back to the consolation gift where we came a very close second behind Redcliffe. Ben & Mykel ran in great times.
The individual sprint relay Billy Mewton was just pipped by a super fast Titan, & in the final came a close third to Shannon Walker( The fastest footballer playing N.R. L) & another Titan only losing by a head. Billy Featherby took first in the consolation 120m gift.
On the day Titans can claim the unoffical club award as they won the Gift Relay & 1st & 2nd in the fastest footballer 120m sprint , but our club can claim 2nd spot coming third in the fastest footballer 120m spint, 2nd in the relay, & 1st in the consolation 120m gift. Our supporters who travelled over there were thrilled by our success considering our opposition & will be a great launching pad for our history making reentry into the 2009 Senior Competition.

Joint Venture - Hinterland Bulldogs & Kilcoy Yowies
In a significant deal on the SCGRL Landscape - the Hinterland Bulldogs bases at Beerwah and the Kilcoy Yowies have annouced today that for season 2009 they will join forces in the form of a joint venture to compete in the SCGRL Caloundra RSL Cup!
With both clubs not able to fill to full senior teams to meet the SCGRL requirements, they have come to each others aid!
Hinterland Bulldogs will filled A Grade and under 18's while the Yowies will have Reserve Grade and under 18's.
Both clubs will wear their respective colors and train at each clubs home grounds under the control of their own coaching and training staff, but will come together on game day to play as a unified outfit!
Another positive for the clubs and the SCGRL will be excess players will be not only able to float between the grades as per any other club but will also spill over into a C Grade club - with the possible candidate being the reemgered Maleny Heelers!
This will be a work in progress but is a real positive for both clubs; as they retain their own identities, SCGRL as the joint venture will be a very strong outfit and for RL in general with the Range Region given a competitive RL club and the possibility of the reemergence of a historic club!

SCGRL Clubs have put their money where their mouth is by support its 2 representatives in this years Police and Women's World Cups - both to be staged here on the coast from the 3rd - 16th November!
'The SCGRL clubs have thrown their full support behind 2 of its own stars that will be competing at the Police and Women’s World Cups. All 14 local league clubs will sponsor our two representatives, Nic Paterson and Tarah Westera, who have been choose to represent Australia in their respective World Cups, which are to be staged here on the Sunshine Coast from 3rd – 16th November at Stockland Park.
SCGRL CEO Billy Moore acknowledged the commitment that the Clubs have undertaken. ‘At a time when clubs are not flush with cash, it shows how committed the SCGRL Clubs are to developing Rugby League whether it is their clubs or not! It is a great initiative and I’m sure both Tarah and Nic are very appreciative and will do not only do Australia but the Sunshine Coast proud when they win their respective World Cups!’
Noosa President Peter McGregor went one step further stating that this is a good positive story and when you consider all the negative publicity that has been circulating from the troubles at the Broncos, it is well over due!
‘After the recent incidents involving the Brisbane Broncos it is good that SCGRL Clubs are able to do something good for the game of Rugby League here on the coast and especially for the Women’s game. We value ladies participation and support of our great game and we need to do all we can to make sure women are aware of that! So this is the least we can do!’ said Peter at last nights SCGRL executive meeting where the support of the clubs was unanimous.
With the SCGRL Clubs throwing their support behind their own, it is hoped that the local community will do the same and get out and support both the Australian Police and Women’s World Cup teams as they try and win the double at Stockland Park over the next month.

By 4.30pm, he had a double – a brace of tries that had resurrected the Noosa Pirates’ hopes of a hat-trick of Maroochy RSL Cup titles.
Benefiting on both occasions from play-maker Noel Goldthorpe’s foresight, McCook crossed twice in eight minutes to turn the match. From 8-nil down, the Pirates claimed a late 10-8 lead. But he very nearly wasn’t on the field at all.
Handed an eight-week ban in the opening round of the competition for a high shot in the Pirates’ win over Kilcoy, McCook said yesterday he had at the time considered retirement.
“I was a bit upset about that, the way it all went down," he said.
"I play hard football, I always have played hard, but never dirty.”
“Noel (Goldthorpe, Pirates’ captain-coach) took me aside, had a bit of a talk to me and got me back in it.”
Good thing that, with McCook one of the Pirates’ best not just yesterday, but throughout the year.
After playing a relatively flat first half, marred by repetitive handling errors from both sides, McCook said the change of approach for the second 40 minutes was obvious.
“We decided that we should hold onto the ball, complete our sets,” he laughed.
“We did that, we put pressure on them and they broke.
“It’s a lot easier to win a game when you’ve got the ball.”
The 26-year-old, while he has played in Noosa’s last four grand final appearances, hadn’t crossed the line until yesterday, with the circumstances making the brace all the more special.
“It’s the first time I’ve scored in a grand final, which is pretty good, but to score two to win the game is great,” he said.
“It’s the best feeling ever, I couldn’t describe it.
“It’s probably one of the hardest games I’ve played in.”
While McCook revelled in his free-running role around the fringes of the ruck, prop Trent Heathwood seemed to have his hand in the air calling for the ball on every second hit-up.
He happily trucked the ball up time and time again, clawing back valuable metres from within the Pirates’ half.
His attacking effort was matched by a rock-solid defensive display.
For shouldering such a work-load, Heathwood was duly rewarded with the Mal Meninga Medal for the best on field in the final.
The nuggety new-comer to the Pirates also sent centre Anthony Zipf in for the match winning try, offloading at the end of yet another bullocking charge.
Heathwood was openly thrilled with the honour.
“I can’t believe it,” he said.
“I’ve been playing good footy all year, to win this medal means a lot to me.
“I didn’t start the season off with the Noosa Pirates, I came into the side about four games into it, some guys came with me into the centres, lifted the young boys up.”
Coincidentally, last year’s Mal Meninga Medal winner was also a Noosa prop, also wearing the number eight – but 2007 recipient Sam McGregor took no part in yesterday’s match, having sat out much of the season recovering from a broken jaw.

Noosa get a threepeat!!
This was not meant to be a year that Noosa would be in the Maroochy RSL Cup grand final, let alone win the premiership.
Last year’s premiership-winning squad had been decimated and after 10 rounds of the 2008 season, the Pirates were back in fifth place with only five wins to their name.
Ladder leader Caboolture was seven points ahead.
Second-placed Maroochydore hadn’t lost a game and third-placed Nambour, the only team to beat the Snakes, was threatening a grand final return.
But in the second half of the season, Noosa managed to turn around turn its campaign for three titles in a row.
Yesterday’s grand final against the Snakes, in front of almost 4000 people at Wises Road, followed an almost identical pattern.
The Pirates were below par in the first half and trailed 4-0 at halftime.
The deficit blew out to 8-0 and a confident Caboolture looked to be in control.
Noosa’s surge started with the first of a double to lock Matt McCook, thanks to lead-up work from skipper Noel Goldthorpe and fullback Anthony Zipf, just after the hour mark and the Pirates’ momentum became so strong, Caboolture was powerless to stop it.
As much as winning an ’08 premiership was a surprise for most Noosa supporters, it was a shock for the Snakes that they somehow had missed out on their first title since 1994.
“I think it just comes down to the day,” Caboolture captain Matt Morris said.
“I thought we wanted it more, but it turns out they’ve got more experience than us in the last 10 minutes.
“They’ve been here the last three times and had players who knew what to do.
“It was there for the taking for us and we should have done it.
“We just got a bit excited at the end, that’s all it comes down to.
“Hats off to (Noosa). Three in a row’s a great effort.”
Caboolture came close to scoring twice in the first 10 minutes and will wonder what might have happened if either try had been allowed and a fast start had been secured.
There were also a couple of try-scoring opportunities which went awry for centre Matt Smith either side of halftime when the minor premiers led 4-0.
And it was a Snakes error which led to the start of Noosa’s fightback.
A downfield kick was knocked on and, from the scrum win that followed, McCook made it over for try No.1.
He snaffled a Goldthorpe grubber kick for the second before Zipf, one of the members of all three premiership-winning squads, finished the job.
“They’re a good side,” Goldthorpe said of the beaten Snakes.
“By rights, they probably should have won today, but football’s a funny game. There’s no favourites, especially in grand finals.”
The Noosa captain-coach rated this premiership above the previous two as far as a coaching achievement is concerned.
“I’ve pulled a whole new team together,” he said.
“At the start of the year, I was a bit worried about where we were going to finish. Our goal was to make the semi-finals and we readjusted from there.”
Once the celebrations from this unexpected success end, the Pirates will start seriously thinking about four in a row

SCGRL Grand Final!
The SCGRL 'Big Day' lived up to expectations - with all four games fitting of their Grand Final status.
The Day started with a tremendous Under 18 Game which was decided in golden point with the Caloundra Sharks running out eventual winners. There has been nothing between these two sides all year and with the talent on show, the future of the SCGRL looks very bright!
The C Grade was probably the upset of the day, with the Yandina Raiders chasing their first premiership in their 21 year existence unable to capitialize on a great season where they have won it all when they fell to the rookies, the Coolum Colts.
The Reserve grade was a repeat of last years GF, with the same result. The star studded Caloundra Sharks rounded out a great day for the southern club with a second premiership. The 2008 match was lot closer then 12 months prior and the Pirates will have confidence that if they square up against the Sharks, they are a real chance of reversing the trend.
In the big game, the Noosa Pirates continued their domination of the Local League with their third consecutive premiership. The Pirates did not have it all their own way and Glen Tomlinson's men could think themselves unluck to not take the prize when they led 8-0 and bombed several opportunities. But in the, the Noel Goldthorpe lead Noosa outfit had the composure and control to hit the tape first. When you consider they lost 9 players from last years Premiership team and were as low as seventh on the table at one stage this year - the Pirates could quite rightly see this as the best of the three!!
It was great day with a crowd in excess of 4000 on hand to witness a fantastic day at Wises Rd, to all the staff a duty especially the Swans personel, thank you from the SCGRL for your great efforts.
What a great 2008 - and bring on 2009!!

Preliminary Finals - big day in the Snake Pit!
In the 3 lower grade games the 'Cream rose to the top!'
In reserve grade Noosa proved to good for a Kawana team that made to many errors to mount a serious challenge to trouble last years Grand Finalists.
This victory sets up a repeat of last years ultimate game with the last year's premiers the Sharks awaiting the Pirates.
In C Grade - the Grand Final most thought was on the cards after the preseason tournament is now a reality, Yandina V Coolum
What a contrast in the teams; Coolum in their inaugural year chase victory, while Yandina are looking for their first title after 21 years. A foundation club when the C Grade League formed in 1987, the Raiders will be the sentimental favourites.
The under 18 did not live up to the expectations after last weekends blockbuster semifinal, but in the end the best team won of the day.
Caloundra showed better composure and ball control to defeat the Bribie Island Warrigals. The Warrigals never gave themselves a chance with too many turnovers and not able to mount any pressure on the Sharks.

Prelim decided in Golden Point!
A game that was expected to be close, delivered and then some!!
The Preliminary Final between Noosa and Caloundra went down to the wire with a Noel Goldthorpe field goal in the first minute of extra time deciding the match.
The Pirates started the better of the two teams skipping out to a 12-0 lead and looking that they could run away with the game. Caloundra got back into the game in the shadows of half time with a converted try less then 30 seconds out from the break.
The second half was what the crowd came to watch - with plenty of action, tension and quality rugby league.
Caloundra took control of the game when they scored two converted tries and a 18-12 lead and this is the way it looked like ending until the Pirates scored on the back of 5 sets of 6 on the Sharks line.
With the game now locked at 18-All the match went into Golden Point extra time.
From the kick off Caloundra dropped the ball and gave possession back to Noosa. The Pirates capitialized on this good fortune and kicked a field goal to win the match 3 tackles later.
Congratulations to the Pirates and commisserations to the Sharks!

Caloundra looking ominous!
The Caloundra Sharks sent a shutter through the Maroochy RSL Premiership with an emphatic 48-14 win over the Maroochydore Swans at Wises Rd on Saturday night!
The Swans started well enough when they got out to an early 8-0 lead, but not even the Caloundra faithful could have expected what was to come.
The Sharks highly regarded backline clicked into gear an took the home side apart with some of the best footy of the year!
This win now puts the Sharks one win from a surprise grand final appearence but dual premiers Noosa lie in their path!
For the Swans it brings down the curtain on a very successful season and the score line was an unfortunate way to finish the year!
In Reserve Grade, Caboolture can look at their year alot like the Swan's A Grade. The Snakes were at or near the top of the competition for the whole season, but now find their year has come to an abrupt halt when they lost to a fired up Noosa 44-24!
The first game on Saturday night produced the best match of the evening with the Caloundra Sharks and the Maroochydore Swans under 18's involved in a thrilling junior encounter!
The Sharks won the game with a minute to spare 26-24 off the back of a 45 meter penality goal!
The young players displayed great skill, ferrous defence and good sportsmanship!

Snakes sneak home in a thriller!!
The weekend's 2nd Semi-Finals lived up expectations, especially at the Snake Pit on Sunday!
In the major semifinal at Caboolture, the Snakes gained entry into the Maroochy RSL Grand Final by a thrilling, controversial and tough encounter over reigning premiers Noosa 20-18!
Both sides at times can lay claim to squandering opportunities to win the match, especially Noosa, but in the end Caboolture hung on for a win infront of a large local crowd!
The Pirates got out of the box quickly scoring two great tries and bombed a third which would have made it very difficult for the Snakes. This reprive was enough to ignite the slow starting local lads and they quickly got back into the match!
The game ebbed and flowed with some exciting play and rugged defence keeping the crowd on the edge of their seats!
With 1 minute remaining the Pirates last throw of the dice put them 80 meters from the Caboolture try line with 6 tackles to snatch victory. Showing all their experience the Noosa outfit clinically went the length of the field. On the final tackle Goldthorpe housted a bomb which was dropped and the Pirates 5/8 Brendan Williams dived on the lose ball to claim the try. Unfortunately for him and the Noosa Pirates the try was disallowed for a knockon and controvially the ensueing scrum was not packed and the game was over!!
The match had everything, and all involved hope there is more to come!!
In the other Sunday Major Semi-Finals Caloundra lived up to their tag as favorites for back to back premierships with a quality 38-16!
The Under 18's clash between Kilcoy and Bribie Island was as exciting as the A Grade, with the Yowies claiming victory in golden point with a penalty goal 30-28 over the Warrigals! The game was high quality with great skills on display which shows the future of league on the coast has a very bright future!

In the main game the home team looked to provide their legion of fans with the result they were hoping for when the Colts went into half time leading 16-8 over Pomona-Cooran.
The Colts looked to have the match wrapped up when they scored early in the 2nd half, but the Crushers were not to be denied with a stunning comeback to run out eventual winners 30-22.
Pomona now take on title favourites Yandina, and Caboolture look to finish off Coolum's season when the sides go around at Yandina on Saturday!

Maroochy RSL Cup; Week 1 - Now there are four!
Week 1 of the semifinals provided some interesting results on both days.
On Saturday, the A Grade was a dour struggle with both teams guilty of too much dropped ball and with this combined with a high penality count, the game lacked momentum. It was not till the final 10 minutes that the match ignited, with the Crushers nearly stealing the game from the Sharks.
Caloundra lead the whole match and with their forwards able to match the larger Nambour pack, it was their backs that capitalize on the very few opportunities on offer! The Sharks won 20-10!
In the lower grade games, it was not a good night for the home team as they were eliminated by Noosa in Reserve Grade 30-16, and Maroochydore were big winners in the Under 18's 34-4!
The winners progress to next Saturday's Minor Semifinal at Maroochydore while the lossers have finished for the year!!
On Sunday, the resurgent Noosa Pirates have continued their good form with a exciting win over the Maroochydore Swans 34-22! What made this victory all the more significant, the Pirates won without the direction and control of star half back Noel Goldthorpe!
In the lower grades; the two top sides going into the 2 V 3 clashes were defeated!
Caboolture went down to Kawana in the match of the weekend 23-17. In the Under 18's, Bribie Island were too good for season hotshots Caloundra 40-22!
The winners from Sunday's Games take on the Minor Premiers in each respective grade at Caboolture on Sunday, while the lossers are heading to Wises Rd in a do or die game!!

Due to the wash out of this round when it was scheduled to be played in Round 8, and the closeness of the Maroochy RSL A Grade table, the President Cup A Grade teams could not be calculated!
Even with this prestigious trophy up for grabs, this match like several others in this, the last weekend of the regular season has consequences for the make up of the final 5.
If the Swans win, then they are guaranteed 2nd place and home semifinal. A loss opens the door for Noosa to take this honor.
At the other end of the top 5 - if the Caloundra Sharks win at home over Gympie then they seal fifth place, a loss hear opens the door for the Kawana Dolphins on Sunday to steal the last semifinal place from under the Sharks nose if they can upset Nambour at home!
It is a great final weekend of the regular season!!

Reserve Grade and Under 18's Semi-Finals decided!
with only 1 week remaining in the regular season, the top 5 teams in both the Maroochy Reserve Grade and Under 18's has virtually been decided.
In Reserve Grade, the only question is for 5th place between Nambour and Maroochydore. The Swans suffered a heavy defeat last weekend against reigning champions and hot favourites for season 2008, Caloundra which has virtually ended their semi final chances. The Swans are only 2 points adrift of 5th place Nambour, but with a points diffential difference of 171 points in favour of the Crushers, some big scores are going to be required this weekend to give Maroochydore any chance!
The top 5 going into the last round is; Caloundra, Caboolture, Kawana, Noosa, Nambour -- Maroochydore (6th)
In the under 18's the final five equation is alot simpler and is decided for the finals.
The top 5 is currently; Kilcoy, Caloundra, Bribie Island, Maroochydore, Noosa.
The only difference could come from Caloundra and Bribie Island. One point seperates 2nd and 3rd and this weeks results will sort this out!

After narrow losses to Noosa and Kawana, the Swans prevailed in an exciting round 16 Maroochy RSL Cup match of the round 24-22.
As the score indicates, there was nothing between the teams with the boot of goal kicking whiz, DJ McGlynn being the difference. Both sides scored 4 tries, but McGlynn converted all while the Crushers kicked only 3 from 4.
This win takes Maroochydore back to second on the table, swapping places with Nambour!

Round 15 - Can Kawana jump into the top 5!
With only 5 weeks left in the regular season, any teams looking to sneak into the top 5 and give themselves a chance of winning this year's title will have to produce the goods over the next fortnight!
Two key games in determining the finals will be played this Sunday. Bribie Island are at home to neighbours Caloundra and Kawana take on the Maroochydore Swans.
The Warrigals are in the title race by the bearest of margins and have to win against their more fancied rivals. For the Sharks, they hold down 5th spot on the table, with Kawana nipping at their heals, one mistake and they could down out of the five.
In the other decisive game, Maroochydore must bounce back against Kawana as Nambour is only 1 point behind them and finishing 2nd grants that team the advantage of the first home semifinal. For Kawana a victory here could carry a bigger prize of moving them into the top 5.

Noosa in a thriller!
It was billed as possibly the 'match of the year' and it didn't disappoint especially in the second half!
Based on what was produced, it would not be a bad Grand Final for season 2008, but there are at least 3 may be four sides to argue that!
The first half was a dour affair especially compared to the 2nd stanza even though the teams came into the sheds locked at 8 points all.
The real action started in the next half, with end to end action.
And the match was not decided till the last tackle! Leading 14-12 with 58 seconds on the clock, Noosa made a long range break though the middle of the Swans water tight defense. In the ensueing play the ball a penality was awarded for hands in the ruck and this allowed the Pirates to go on the attack. The Swans on their line bravely held out the reigning Premiers until the last tackle. With all eyes on Noel Goldthorpe, the likely recipient of the last pass, dummy half Terry Carroll took it on himself to go it alone in an all or nothing gamble which paid off with a try beside the posts. Noosa were victorious 18-14!

Round 11 - still nothing between the top sides!
Still nothing seperates the top sides in the competition!
Round 11 highlighted that point yet again, with several of the Maroochy RSL cup games going down to the wire.
The other highlights for the June 28 and 29 weekend was Kilcoy recorded their 2 win in 3 weeks and Bribie Island kept their 2008 hopes alive with a courageous draw at home to competition leaders Maroochydore.
In Gympie on Saturday night, Kilcoy came of age with an impressive 38-8 win over the Devils. This has virtually sunk the Gympie sides 2008 campaign.
Also on Saturday night the Warrigals at their fortress on the Island, handed out the shock of the round with a 24-all draw with the competition leaders Maroochydore.
Kawana, as expected were too strong for a gallent Hinterland, running out winners 30-0.
Sunday's action was fantastic, with both of the blockbuster games decided only in the last minutes of the match.
Cabooluture had an impressive away win over Noosa 30-26. If there was any doubt over the Snake's title credentials, they were answered on Sunday.
And to finish the round, at Shark Park Nambour got over last weekends heart breaking 1 point loss to record a very solid 28-24 over an equally unlucky Caloundra.

In Gympie a carbon copy of the game in Nambour, but with different players. This time it was Bribie Island spoiling the home crowds party when they were too good for Gympie 25-24.
In the other game featuring teams from the top 6, Caloundra were in good form to defeat the Kawana Dolphins at Stockland Park. The Sharks won 36-10 and took away not only the 2 points but also the Alfie Langer Trophy.

On the Sunday, a much improved Wide Bay performance saw the team go down to the South East Queensland Kookaburras, which is a combined Gold Coast-Ispwich outfit 22-10.
The stand out player for the tournament for the Bulls was Caboolture back rower Dan Ivan.

Falcons out of Toyota Cup!
The Sunshine Coast Falcons had their wings clipped in the third round of the 2008 Centenial Toyota Cup by the Gold Coast Vikings.
The Falcons went down 32-8, in a match where the score line did not reflect the game, with the Vikings scoring 2 tries in the dying minutes.
In a game which was marred by a very heavy penality rate, the Falcons found themselves behind 16-0, before fighting their way back to 16-8. Unfortunately the Black and Golds were not able to capitalise on good field position at this point, had they done so, the outcome may have been very different.
Mid way through the second half, down 22-6, the Sunshine Coast team did not give up and after repelling 4 sets of six on their line, again attacked the hosts line, but to no avail.
While they are now out of this years competition, it is a great achievement for this team to have one the 47th Battalion over Bundaberg and then in the second round to defeat a very strong Toowoomba Clydsdales.

The Red and Whites were an improved team for the first 15 minutes of the second half, but unfortunately were not able to convert that extra enthusiasm and intensity into points. South West ran away with the game in the later stages scoring numerous tries!

All the effort has paid dividends now with the club winning 3 in a row and along with Yandina are the only undefeated club in C Grade premiership rounds!

Maroochydore clear leaders in 2008 title race!
The Swans have more then confirmed they are the front runners with a decisive victory at home over Nambour!
Both sides went into the game with an undefeated record, but the Swans were far too strong on the day, winning 34-14.
The win was all the more convincing when you consider the Maroochydore club had 4 players backing up from Wide Bay duty from the previous day!
In other results, the Pirates have sent a wake up call to the rest of the competition with a very good win at home 22-8 over Kawana. The return of Noel Goldthorpe was welcomed by Noosa, but when you consider they also have Wide Bay representatives Anthony Zipf from injury and Matt McCook from suspension, the Pirates are still a force in 2008!
Bribie were too good for Hinterland 30-18, Caloundra accounted for Kilcoy 38-8 and Caboolture had a good away win over Gympie 40-14.
A grade which does not feature much in the news, Under 18 had a magnificent top of the table match between the previously undefeated Kilcoy and Caloundra, the match ended in a 28 all draw!

FALCONS DEFEAT TOOWOOMBA
The Sunshine Coast Falcons proved too strong for the Toowoomba Clydesdales at Caboolture on Saturday running out winners 32-16.
This takes Des Allen's men into the 3rd Round of the Toyota Cup and will now meet the Gold Coast on Saturday 31st May at a venue still to be decided.
The Coast boys went into the half time break very lucky to be leading 12-10 after a poor first half.
A lack of ball security and silly penalties gave the Toowoomaba side a mountain of possession and it was only for the tenacious defence of the black and golds that they reminder close to their western cousins!
But the second half, while not brillant was a big improvement and a try in the first couple of minutes to near man of the match performer D.J. McGlynn gave the Falcons the shot in the arm they needed and were never headed again!
Sunshine Coast had many solid performers with the front row of Nic Patterson and Jason Wardrop leading the way! Lock Darrne Burns was one of the best, while captain Paul Cohen was outstanding at half!
Bring on the Gold Coast Vikings!!

Yandina win a fitting Final!!
The Yandina Raiders have after a 21 year wait - finally added some silver to their cabinet!! The Raiders defeated the favorites Coolum in a great final at the Yandina Sports Ground.
Yandina, backed by a large local crowd started too intensely for Coolum lead by a fired up forward pack. Stand outs for the Green and Golds were man of the match Jason Toomey and back rower Mick O'Halloran.
Down 10-6 just before the break, Coolum finally came to grips with the added intensity required for a final and started to dominate. The Colts were unlucky not to go into the break ahead when a spectular try was not awarded due to an offside Yandina player.
In a dog fight of a second half, Coolum in the end did not help their cause with too many unforced errors and penalities.
The final score line of 20-10 was a true reflection of the game, and has now set the bar for the upcoming Red Rooster Cup, which starts in a fortnight!
In the other games, Pomona recorded their first win of the season, defeating Beachmere.
While the other big news of the day was the successful trial between Maroochydore and Caboolture. In Sunday's blockbuster between SCGRL powerhouses Caloundra and Noosa at Shark Park, the home team ran out winners 28-16. The Yandina Raiders bounced back from last weeks heavy loss to new boys Coolum to record an impressive 64-6 win against Pomona Cooran. The Raiders, who were shocked last week by the Colts, responded in the best manner possible with Tim Humphreys scoring a hat trick. In the other game, the home side Beachmere were not good enough to match the class of Coolum. The Colts defeated the Pelicans 48-10, with Corey Gary continuing his try scoring feats with 4 tries. This bag of 4 points is a repeat of last week, with the crafty number 9 now having posted 8 tries in a fortnight!!

Noosa back in the winners circle!
The local derby of the north: Noosa V Gympie produced a thriller at Pirate Park on Sunday.
After last weeks devasting loss the reigning premiers were looking to 'get back in the saddle' against archrivals Gympie at home, and the Devils nearly spoilt the party when they just failed to run down the home team 18-14!
In atrocious conditions, the Gympie Devils were chasing their first won on Noosa soil in 5 years and after a dominate display against Kilcoy, the Devils had every right to think they were in with a chance. As it turned out, they only just missed out! Attacking in the last 10 minutes with only 4 points difference, Gympie almost snatched the game!!
In the final game of the round - Maroochydore continued its winning way, with a closer then expected victory at home against the winless Kilcoy Yowies. The Swans are only 1 of two teams still undefeated in the Maroochy RSL cup and they kept their record intacted with a 20-12 scoreline!

Saturday's action from Round 3 MRSL Cup
Caboolture claimed another big scalp in the Maroochy RSL cup with an away win at Calooundra. In wet and slippery conditions, the Snakes continued their giant killing run with a classy performance to defeat Caloundra 42-12 vitory. The score was only 18-12 to the visitors at half time and still any ones game, but the local side ran out of petrol late in the game with only 12 men - giant Front Row Nic Patterson was sent off mid way through the first stanza - and the Black and Golds piled on 24 points in the last 15 minutes.
Bribie Island suffered back to back defeats when they went down to Kawana at home in a close match 12-18.
To finish off Saturdays action, Nambour continued its undefeated run with a convincing 34-10 win at Beerwah. The Hinterland Bulldogs are yet to record a victory in this years premiership, and things do not get any easier with next weeks game against archrivals Caboolture in the Snake Pit!

Snakes Destroy the Premiers!!
The Caboolture Snakes have sent a shutter through the Maroochy RSL Cup by thrashing Noosa 62-18 yesterday!
Centre Phil Young lead the way scoring a hat trick in the Snakes 9 try to 4 romp over the defending premiers.
After last week letting a 22-6 lead slip against Nambour, punters could have been forgiven for questioning the Wide Bay Challenge Champions title aspirations. Those thoughts have now be quashed with this display.
Kawana opened their seasons account by defeating the Hinterland Bulldogs at Stockland Park in a hard fort victory 16-6.
In the final match of the round, the Gympie Devils finished one of the longest 2 week road trips with a victory over new boys Kilcoy 38-18. Last week the Devils had to return from Bribie Island without success, but yesterday the trip home would have been alot easier with 2 Maroochy RSL cup points in the bag!!

Maroochy RSL Cup Round 2 Saturday Review!!
Maroochydore Swans sit atop of the Maroochy RSL Cup A Grade table after an impressive defensive display against the Bribie Island at Wises Road on Saturday night. The Swans kept a clean sheet, defeating the Warrigals 22-0. The score was not quite a true relection of the game with the home side posting 3 tries to nil, but they did not have the 2 competition points comfortably in the bag until the last 10 minutes. Bribie will be disappointed in their performance, mainly their ball handling. They repeatedly turned over possession at both ends of the park. Coach Leon Cleal would be impressed with the teams committment and defensive effort!
In the other Saturday night game - Nambour edged out Caloundra 18-10. In a great night of footy at Crusher Park, as expected there was not much between the traditional heavyweight of the Sunshine Coast with Reserve Grade going to the home team 12-10, while in the U18's the Sharks reversed the tables 40-28.

Coolum make impressive start!!
The Coolum Colts have sent an emphatic message to all teams in the Red Rooster Cup, they are the real deal after they dispensed a flogging to title favourites Yandina on Saturday. The Colts defeated the Raiders 62-10 in front of a large and very happy home crowd.
Coolum had many top performers on the day, but the standout was hooker Corey Gray who scored 4 tries and dominated around the rucks with constant darts from dummy half. The Raiders were in the game up until 25 mimutes when they trailed 12-10, but the attacking flair of the Colts in the end proved to much as the ran away with the game.
In the other match, the Beachmere Pelicans edged out Pomona Cooran 14-10. In a very tight tussle the Cutters had their chances, but were unable to claw back the Pelicans.

Maroochy RSL Round 1 Saturday night Review!!
The 2008 season is under way and based on results from round 1 action it is going to be a great year for the Maroochy RSL Cup.
Saturday night saw three games played.
At Caloundra the hosts took on the Kawana Dolphins for the Alfie Langer Trophy. In a thrilling game which went down to the wire - Caloundra ran out winners 24-12.
The Dolphins were leading by 2 points with 10 minutes remaining, but a length of the field try swung the match back to the Black and Golds, and a try on full time sealed the outcome!
At Kilcoy - the new boys had a tough night against the premiers. Noosa brought their A Grade game and the Yowies were blown off their feet early on. The Pirates went out to an 18-0 lead after 10 minutes. To the credit of home team they hung in and showed flashed of brilliance. Noosa were eventual winners 44-16. A big positive for the Yowies was the victories in both U 18's and Reserve Grade.
To finish off the night - the Maroochydore Swans took on the Hinterland Bulldogs at Beerwah. In a torrid encounter - the Green, Black and Whites were victors 30-14.

History of Rugby League on the Coast: Part 3
Part 3 focuses on the 1960's and 1970's eras. The game went from strength to strength during these decades with the powerbase strongly in the grip of Nambour - its two clubs, All Whites and Souths dominated, featuring in the majority of the annual deciders, especially in the 60's.
By the 1970's, while these clubs were still prominent, the feature of this decade was the arrival of the clubs that were to take over the mantle from Nambour's teams in the ensuring years. Clubs such as Noosa, Maroochydore, Caloundra, Stanley Rivers and Caboolture were all formed or readmitted into the SCGRL competition within this decade.

Weekend Trial Info.
Last weekend saw a few firsts in the final trial weekend before Easter/Wide Bay Challenge and then the start of the season.
Kilcoy had their first offical A Grade game at their ground. They not only put their team and officials thru a 'hit out' but also their new club house.
In the U 18's, the Yowies/Stanley Rivers were to strong for Caboolture 28-12. In the two senior games, Kilcoy took on SCGRL powerhouse Kawana. While they went down 14-34 in Reserve Grade and 14-28 in A Grade, the club will be proud of the effort of players involved knowing they will only improve from here.
The Hinterland Bulldogs ventured up the hill to Maleny and this proved a great success. The team won A Grade 32-10 against Bundaberg Brothers, but more importantly had a good local crowd to cheer on the boys. The club will look to take more games to Witta Oval based on the interest shown by the town. In Reserve Grade, the Maroochydore Reserve/A Grade were too strong for the Bulldogs.
Gympie put on a good performance against their more fancied opponents - Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles going down 38-24 at home. The match played over 4 X 20 min proved a great learning experience for the local players who went up against a combined FOGS A and U 20's team.
The game gave the FOGS team the opportunity to trial some fringe players, while Darren Burns - Gympie coach saw his chargers take on some quality opposition.

Kawana have also had a successful start to the year when they travelled to Brisbane an defeated the strong Valley's club.

Gympie recruit well for 2008 season!
THE Gympie Devils' 2008 campaign has been given an early shot in the arm, with powerhouse South Burnett props Jay Wehlow and Adam Pascoe making clear their intentions to help guide the Gold City outfit to its first finals series in years.
Player-coach Darren Burns yesterday confirmed the Kingaroy duo would join the club as early as next week, explaining their size and power would bring some much-needed bulk to the side.
The hard-hitting forwards will be joined at Albert Park by South Burnett Bushrangers team-mate Mick Freeman, a solid backrower with the pace to match his strength.
The trio was instrumental in guiding the fledgling Bushrangers to the 2007 Ipswich Rugby League grand final and the 2006 semi-finals in their maiden season, and Burns is confident they will have a similar impact on the Devils' 2008 Sunshine Coast/Gympie Rugby League premiership campaign.
"I stopped in at Kingaroy to see the boys last week and they've said they're coming," the player-coach told The Gympie Times yesterday.
"They'll be starting training here next week and they're all keen to have a run for Gympie in the Sunshine Coast competition.
"I didn't get to meet Jay Wehlow, but the boys said he's coming. He's a 60-minute player and he's got plenty of height (188cm) and fitness, so he's a welcome addition."
The trio was expected to train at the club's first training session yesterday, but Burns postponed the session until next Tuesday due to assistant coach Bobby Leach renewing his marital vows in the afternoon.
Meanwhile, Devils players will begin their season's community duties by donating blood at Gympie Hospital next Wednesday

Manly win infront of 8000 spectators.
At a packed Stockland Park, the Manly SeaEagles got a good confidence boost on the eve of their 2008 campaign with a solid win over the NZ Warriors, 26-16.
In blustery conditions, a great crowd of over 8000 turned out to watch the NRL stars go round.
Both coaches rotated players to give all their respective squads some game time and most importantly all players came through the encounter unscathed.
Manly veteran Steve Menzies, who left the field early in the first half with what appeared to be a neck problem was later cleared of any serious injury and will take his place in the SeaEagles opening round of the NRL season in a fortnight.
The Warriors came back from a slow start to finish the first half in front by 12-10.
Manly though had the better of the second stanza and with young winger Michael Bani scoring a hat trick ran out winners 26-16.
The crowd was especially pleasing seeing it was not the best of conditions and with the link between the Sunshine Coast FOGS team - the S.C. SeaEagles, and Manly going to a higher level next year, a NRL competition game is on the cards. The possibility of this happening is only strengthened by last night's attendence.

FOGS defeat Noosa in big Clash
The Sunshine Coast SeaEagles have gained bragging rights over local league premiers Noosa last night at Stockland Park winning the much anticipated battle, 22-14.
In a high quality game of Rugby League in wet and windy conditions both sides showed the benefit of a good offseason training program, with the pace of the game not letting up until the final whistle.
The Pirates were on the back foot with the FOGS outfit jumping to a 12-0 lead in the first 15 minutes with centre Chris Chaisty scoring an early double for the SeaEagles.
Noosa started to get into the match with solid defence and good ball control and the pendulum swung back their way when flashy winger, Nathan Robinson picked up a loss pass and raced 70 metres to score.
The revival continued with classy fullback Anthony Zipf scoring a try on the end of some good lead up work by the halves. Unfortunately for Noosa Zipf was unsuccessful with both conversions and the Pirates went into half time down 12-8.
The 3peat premiers finally got their noses in front early in the second half with Robinson picking up his double for the night and the Pirates led 14-12.
The SeaEagles lead by Captain Coach Brandon Costin, gained the upper hand in the later stages of the game. Noosa's handling let them down when they only completed 1 of 13 sets in the 2nd half and were not able to capitalise on the strong wind at their backs.
The Maroon and Whites scored two late tries, one on the hooter to run out winners 22-14.
The game was a preseason trial but it was a great exhibition of the quality of Rugby League on the coast - both these teams based on last night will be expecting big seasons in 2008.

Snakes Win at Bundy Carnival!!
The Caboolture Snakes fired a warning shot over the bow of all clubs in this seasons SCGRL Maroochy RSL premiership. The Snakes recorded an impressive win in the Bundaberg invitational on the weekend. In a modified tournament over 2 days the southern SCGRL club was too good for teams as far north as Gladstone and Yepoon.
Caboolture played 3 games on Saturday and one on Sunday plus the Semi-Final and Grand Final
Saturday results were victories over CQ North Chargers 8-4 and Hervey Bay 12-4.
The Snakes only taste of defeat for the weekend was at the hands of last years Bundaberg premiers Across the Waves 8-4.
On Sunday the last round saw the Black and Golds play Bundaberg Brothers at 9:30 and won 16 to 4, the highest score of the weekend. The team then had a long wait - 1:40 for the semi final and recorded a classy win against Gladstone Brothers 12 to 4.
This qualified the team for the Grand Final against Yepoon, but only had a five minute break to prepare. In an exciting finish to a great weekend Yepoon scored on the hooter to level the scores 8 all and the match went into extra time. In the 2nd five minutes of overtime Michael Crowe took an intercept and Caboolture won the game 12-8.
To add to the trophy cabinet - Phillip Young also won the foot race on Saturday.

Noosa go back to back!!
The Pirates lead by captain coach Noel Goldthorpe proved to strong for a determined Nambour Crushers in the SCGRL Maroochy RSL A Grade Grand Final running out victors 44-18.
The score did not reflect the closeness of the match, with the reigning premiers scoring 4 times in the last 18 minutes to run away with the game.
The Crushers looked to be going into half time with a 6 point lead - but conceded 2 times in the last 3 minutes to hand their northern cousins a 6 point advantage.
Early in the 2nd half, Nambour clawed their way back into the game with a great solo try by captain coach Rod West, but from then on, it was one way traffic.
Noosa's man of the match and Mal Meninga medal winner Sam McGregor lead from the front but had good support from Brendan Williams.
For the Crushers - Rod West was again superb and took out the Crushers player of the match.

The Sharks deliver on promise!!
The Caloundra Sharks, the 2007 most dominant team in the league - delivered the only premiership of the afternoon the proud club, when they defeated Noosa 36-18.
The Sharks finished the regular season with the best for and against of any team in the SCGRL - and looked destined to win the 2007 title. All this came unstuck, when a fortnight ago, the Pirates upset the Sharks in the major semifinal. Things got back on track last weekend with a strong performance against Caboolture and Caloundra continued on in Sunday's Grand Final.
Man of the Match, Sharks 5/8 Chris Farrow provided alot of the spark, but he was not alone in the star studded back line. Brad 'joey'Ibbs at half played a perfect foil.
For the Pirates - they never gave up, but missed the services for former Qld State of Origin star Dale Shearer who was unable to recover from a calf injury sustained a fortnight earlier.

In a close battle the Yandina spirit came to the fore as they lifted against the hot favourites. The Raiders drew level with the reigning premiers 14-All at half time.
In the 2nd half though, Kilcoy showed their class and posted 12 unanswered points. Lead by inspirational Queensland Range Brendan Christensen and captain coach Troy Edwards, the men from the other side of the range proved too strong.
Final score 26-14.

U 20's - Noosa edge out the Sharks
In the climax to the most competitive grade in the SCGRL - the Noosa Pirates were too strong in the later stages of the second half to draw away from a gallent Caloundra. With the scores locked up a 12-All at half time, the turning point came 1/2 way through the second half when the Sharks were pressing the Pirates line. The 'black and gold's' crossed, but failed to ground the ball. Within minutes the Pirates got down the other end and scored. This 12 point swing provided the momentum for the Pirates and they were never headed. Final score, a 24-12 victory for Noosa.

Nambour win gritty encounter!!
The Nambour Crushers have upset favourites Kawana to sneak into the 2007 SCGRL A Grade Grand Final 20-18.
Going into the match, the Crushers looked to be crippled with the loss of star half back Matt Smith and powerhouse backrower Sam Foley, but yet again they have found an answer.
Rod West and the whole club would be proud of their teams efforts and never say die attitude.
The game ebbed and flowed, with the lead changing numerous times. Kawana had their chances to seal the match, taking the lead during both halves but were unable to close out the determined Crushers.
For the Dolphins it has been a good year, but they will be disappointed that they were not able to make their first grand final appearence in 6 years.
For the Nambour outfit - they now take on Noosa in the game of the year!!

Yandina come from behind!!
In arguably the match of the day, the Yandina Raiders came from 20-6 down to overrun the Kingaroy Red Ants. With the South Burnett team looking like they were going to rack up a cricket score, the Raiders dug deep and found something extra.
Using a strong breeze at their backs in the 2nd half, Yandina kicked well and with the good field position put too much pressure on Kingaroy, who came up with some cruicial errors.
Yandina now have to stop Kilcoy going back to back next Sunday.

Sharks storm into G.F. in 2 Grades

Noosa prevail in a mud fest!!
Unfortunately for the Rugby League public of the Coast - the weather spoil the match of the year. With the much needed rain - just not required on a Sunday Afternoon at Noosa - 70 mm fell over the ground in Tewantin prior and during the main game.
It was still remarkably a spectical dispite the field being vitually a sheet of water. Both coaches could not complain about the committment of their respective teams. The handling was also commendable considering - Noosa completed 19/21 sets in first half and Kawana would have been near that mark. These stats would be appreicated by any coach in dry weather, let alone in the flood the game was played in.
For the record - Noosa prevailed 14-0, but not much could be drawn from the clash due to the conditions other then the gap between the sides is very small and we eagerly await the rematch later in the year.
