Waimea College double success.
Waimea College volleyball teams have been extremely successful in South Island tournaments in the past, but never before had the senior boys and girls teams won in the same year – until now.
The girl’s team dropped two sets over seven games and rebounded from one set down to beat Avonside in the final, three sets to one. Manager Kelly Higgins says the result is a big confidence booster heading into the Tasman Champs this weekend.
“The results of this weekend have big influence on out seeding at the National champs at the end of the month.”
The boys were even more dominant, not dropping one set throughout the whole eight games they played. Meeting Riccarton in the final didn’t prove to be the test they expected after losing to them in the final last year. Captain Chris Duthie says he didn’t expect to do as well as they did.
“I thought we would win but to go through the whole tournament without dropping a set is pretty awesome.”
After the Tasman Champs this weekend the two sides will travel to the Nationals, where both are hoping for a top four placing at least. Girls captain Melissa Duff says there are still a few things to work if they want to beat the school’s current best place at the tournament of third.
“Our blocking and consistency of serving need some work but hopefully we will do that this weekend and do really well at the nationals.”
Both captains said their respective coaches, Pat Shone and Colin Redpath, deserved a lot of credit for the titles.
