CENTENARY OF BREWARRINA RUGBY LEAGUE
Brewarrina Goo-Gars Rugby League Club has celebrated 100 years of rugby league with a presentation of a commemorative centenary plaque at the Barwon Darling Cup pre-season carnival today at Brewarrina Sportsground.
Local Aboriginal elder Les Darcy, who has been involved as a player and official across the Barwon Darling for 63 years, had the honour of unveiling the plaque which coincided with the launch of the 2010 senior competition.
“It’s an outstanding achievement to see the sport still going strong after 100 years, I’m very proud to be able to help celebrate this occasion, all the players and officials should be congratulated for their efforts in ensuring rugby league’s longevity,” said Mr Darcy.
The carnival won by Lightning Ridge Redbacks will whet the appetite of far western rugby league fans ahead the Barwon Darling opening round next weekend.
According Barwon Darling executive officer Anthony McBride anticipation is building across all communities.
“It’s a great launching pad for the season, we are over the moon with the success of the carnival today, it points to an exciting season of rugby league across the Barwon Darling,” said McBride, who has been instrumental in planning and coordinating the 2010 competition.
“I’d like to thank the whole organising committee for their help, a special mention to Brewarrina’s Morris Sullivan who has worked tirelessly both today and in the lead up to the carnival.”
Player of the tournament went to Yetta halfback Scott Briggs.

The 2008 Premiers, Walgett Dragons will what to keep there Cup in 2010 after winning the last Barwon Darling Cup competition. Lead by former Dragon Richard Buddy Simpson will bring out some old school magic and obedience to get the boys to where they need to be.
