Can Kew pull off the fairy tale start to its VWFL history?
Going on home and away season results they are a chance as they face Seaford in the Division 5 finale.
Seaford finished the home and away season three wins clear on top of the ladder. They experienced a strong start to the season, winning their first seven games before suffer their first defeat to Grand Final combatant Kew by 20 points in Round 11. How things have changed since the start of the year for Seaford, struggling to scrape enough players for their first game when the focus was all about having a kick and giggles, so entering the Grand Final with a full bench allowing the team to rotate players and help develop each players skills and positions on the ground.
Kew on the other hand had to wait till Round 8 for its first win of the season, with the Giants at that stage tied to bottom spot on the ladder, with third placed Melbourne Uni already three games above them on the ladder. The first win of the season however sparked them into action with a five game winning streak to finish the home and away rounds one game behind second placed Brunswick, and just percentage behind Melbourne Uni on the ladder. The season started with eighteen players who had never played football before on the list. While they struggled to kick any more than four goals a game in the first four matches, they have not found avenues to goal to help them on their way to the Grand Final.
Seaford is through to the Grand Final after a 34-point win over Brunswick. Summing up the victory, the club pinpointed the pressure on their opposition as the key to the win.
“Our qualifying final was won due to the relentless tackles and on ball pressure applied for four quarters.
“This intensity to win possession of the ball at each contest mixed with everyone doing their 1%ers allowed us to play our game and get the win.”
Kew extended its run to seven straight wins with a 55-point win over Melbourne Uni in the Semi Final, and a 38-point win over Brunswick in the Preliminary Final. After a slow first half, Kew said they were able to find their feet after half time to run out winners.
“ The game was won in the second half with focus being put on winning the ball at stoppages by imposing big pressure and getting numbers to the footy.”
The Grand Final will be live video streamed via the VWFL website, as well as being able to listen on VWFL Radio
