Round 15

Women

Lightning took another step forward to claiming the minor premiership with an easy 77-45 win over the Eagles.  Claire O’Bryan (28.8ppg) was unstoppable, racking up a whopping 43 points for a season high and that included 8 shots from outside the three point line (24pts!).  After a close first quarter saw the Eagles go ahead 14-12, O’Bryan took control, hitting 18pts as the Lightning stormed away from the birds with a 26-12 run to lead 38-26 at the half time break. Tamara Sheppard (20ppg) added 20 as Lightning continued to dominate the game.  With O’Bryan leading the way in a number of statistical records and Sheppard lending support the rest of the teams will be hard pressed to knock them out of top spot.  Megan Reeve (17) and Katherine Hollis (13) stood out for the Eagles who are struggling to find that championship form.

University Rebels slipped by the Tracy Village Jets 67-55 to take a firm grip on second place on the competition ladder.  Jamie Lee Peris (23ppg) impressed with a game high 29pts with young junior Michelle Friel chipping in with 13.  The Rebels got a small break on the Jets in the second quarter with a 15-9 run that gave them a 32-23 lead at the break.  Jets then threw everything they had at the Rebels in an attempt to peg back the difference, but the red and white & blue machine kept their cool and the lead to run out eventual winners.  Tara Carroll (13.6ppg) and Tikesa Docherty-Cole (10ppg) led the attack for the Jets with 17 & 15.

Men

Ansett powered their way past the Eagles 96-62 to jump into second place with Colin Matteson (29ppg) leading the way with 34 points.  Ansett managed to shut down Matthew Smith (23.6ppg) from the Eagles, holding him to just 13 while they enjoyed double figures from Bryce Whitaker (19 @ 17.2ppg) and Rashad Chase (18 @ 20ppg) in their support of Matteson.  The Eagle fell apart in the second quarter, only scoring 7pts while Ansett turned on the afterburners with 24 to put the game out of reach for the usually high flying birds.  Ansett scored more than 20pts in each quarter.  Bobby Guyton added 20 (24.5ppg) to the Eagle cause, but support was lacking from the Eagle bench.

Another minor upset was the Lightning knocking off the Tracy Village Jets 85-78 to keep their playoff aspirations alive.  The Jets led 32-20 after the first quarter and things were looking grim, before Evan Browne (25.4ppg) and Marcus Robinson entered (14ppg) into the fray.  Browne finished with a game high 31 and Robinson 24 as they dragged Lightning back into contention in the third quarter and then helped put away the Jets in the last quarter mainly from the free throw line.  Travis Ellis (25.5ppg) put up his usual numbers, finishing with 26 and Liam McLachlan (10.6ppg) added 17, but they couldn’t keep Lightning from getting the points for the win.

The Warriors rolled past Razzle 92-42 as they celebrated the return of Bayi Handy (22pts) to the lineup.  The lightning quick guard who set a ‘points per game’ record last year of 35.56 is a huge addition to the Warriors as they make their move towards the playoffs.  Brice Giles (23.3ppg) also hit 22 for the maroons as they completely dominated the Razzle .  David Carroll was the only Razzle player to hit double figures and that was 10.
