League WOMEN – Lightning v Eagles

Greta Hollis-Stephensen fired in 25pts (including 7 treys) to lead the Eagles to a 67-51 win over ladder leaders Lightning and in the process lifted the birds off the bottom of the ladder and into playoff contention. While Lightning have only lost four games this season two of them have been to the dark horse Eagles who have in consecutive wins dispatched with the number one and two ranked teams, Uni Rebels and now Lightning. After trailing by one point after one quarter the birds struck back with barrage of three pointers in the second quarter to take a 36-31 half time lead and were never headed after that. A 19-11 run in the third led by Hollis-Stephensen (12.6ppg) and Brianna Grazioli (12 @ 4.4ppg) put the game away for the Eagles as they took a commanding 55-42 lead with just one quarter to play. Claire O’Bryan (29.4ppg) led Lightning with 23 and Chelsea Cook (6.4ppg) added 18 before fouls forced her to the bench as Lightning finished the game with only four players on the court.

League WOMEN – Uni Rebels v Tracy Village Jets

The Uni Rebels chased down the Tracy Village Jets to record a close 70-63 win that wraps up their minor round play. With the bye next week the Rebels should be fully refreshed heading into the playoffs that begin in two weeks. An overall team effort in the first half by the Jets put them into the lead at half time 40-36. With the pressure squarely on the Rebels to respond they did with Jamie Lee-Peris (17 @ 22.9ppg) and Jaylene Bonson (11 @ 14.8ppg) taking control in a third quarter charge that overcame the deficit and put the Rebels up 53-50 going into the last quarter. Keisha Tinley (12 @ 7.8ppg) and Tikesa Docherty-Cole (11 @ 11ppg) tried to keep the Jets in the game, but the Rebels had the momentum on their side as they ran out winners. Trish Graham (11.3ppg) from the Rebels led all scorers with 18 The Jets final game of the season will be against the Eagles whom they will probably meet in a sudden death semi final in two weeks time.

Ladder: Lightning 11-4, Uni Rebels 11-5, Tracy Village Jets 7-8, Eagles 5-10 and Ansett 4-11

League MEN – Uni Rebels v Warriors

Guard Marcus Ch’ng fired the Uni Rebels into a first placed tie with Ansett after he netted 7 of the Rebels points in Overtime to beat the persistent Warriors 78-74. Ch’ng (18 @ 16.2ppg) hit 5 free throws and a field goal as the Rebels prevailed in OT, giving them bragging rights with only two games remaining in the minor rounds. Warrior Bayi Handy (22.2ppg) let the Rebels know early that they would have a battle on their hands as he hit 12 first quarter points to give the Warriors a 24-12 lead. The second quarter was even, both teams hitting 20pts as the Warriors took a 44-32 lead at the half. Defense became priority for the Rebels as they went on an 18-12 run to get back into the game trailing by just six 56-50 at the end of three quarters. Handy (22) hit only 4pts in the 2nd & 3rd quarters combined, but lifted in the last quarter with team mate Johnnie Mclawhorn (28 @ 13.2ppg) lending support. With Handy and McLawhorn firing the Warriors went in front by about 15pts but with a momentum shift the Rebels got back on that roll and they managed to tie up the game in regulation, forcing the OT and ‘Ch’ng time’. Four others hit double figures for the Rebels with Ethan Kennedy (19 @ 29.5ppg) and Chris Baldwin (18 @ 21.2ppg) getting the major share of points. With two games remaining for both teams the minor premiership is still up for grabs.

League MEN – Tracy Village Jets v Eagles

The Eagles completed their series sweep of the Tracy Village Jets with an 81-58 win. Matthew Smith (23ppg) and Bobby Guyton (23.6ppg) paved the way with 24 and 14 points with Shane Harrison (8.1ppg) adding 12. Michael MacLean (12.1ppg) led the depleted Jets side with 27. Without the services of shooter Travis Ellis the Jets were always going to struggle, but they made a game of it for the first half trailing by only two points 36-34. After the break the Eagles pulled away to win it easily, outscoring the Jets 45-24 in the second half. Nick Pattrick added 16 for the Jets.

League MEN –Razzle v Lightning

Lightning had their hands full trying to keep the Razzle from their first and only win of the season, but they prevailed by the narrowest of points to slip past the green and gold 84-83. Neither team is in the playoff picture, but they sure put on a good show. And the Razzle only had six players suited up! Evan Browne (25.5ppg) put up 41 points for the Lightning and his last basket of the game was the difference. David Carroll (21 @ 10ppg), Charlie Reaper (20 @ 7.4ppg) and Ross Vasic (17 @ 14.4ppg) gave Razzle every chance to get that first win with a final last quarter run of 24-14, but it just wasn’t to be.

Ladder: Ansett 14-2, Uni Rebels 14-2, Eagles 11-5, Warriors 8-8, Tracy Village Jets 5-12 Lightning 5-11 and Razzle 0-17.
