Round Ten– Challenge Season

League WOMEN – Uni Rebels v Tracy Village Jets

Jaylene Bonson (22ppg) hit a hot patch in the third quarter that paved the way for a Uni Rebel 76-58 win against the second placed Tracy Village Jets. Bonson sparked an uprising in the third quarter leading to a 30-16 run that left the Jets floundering in their wake. Bonson hit 18 of her game high 29 in the quarter and had plenty of backup from Justine Schmidt (9) and Michelle Friel (14). The Jets were tracking along quite nicely until the hiccup in the third derailed them, newcomer Georgii Howlett (21) was filling up the hoop for the Bombers in and around the keyway as was Tara Carroll (13), but Howlett fell foul of the referees and eventually ended up on the bench with five fouls. The win leaves the Rebels still undefeated and leading the League while the Jets remain in second place.

League Women – Lightning v Eagles

The Eagles flew back onto the winning track with a decisive 49-32 rout of arch rivals the Lightning. The score line is a testament to the defensive effort put in by the Eagles on the night, the effort leading to one of lowest scores for the Lightning for the past couple of seasons. The Hollis sisters, Greta Hollis-Stephensen (15) and Katherine (12), kick started the Eagle machine by leading the team to a 16-6 first quarter lead. Claire O’Bryan then lifted the Lightning back into the game with a few well timed shots to trail 24-18 at the half. O’Bryan was kept relatively quite in this game as her point total of 12 is well below her average of 20ppg. After an even third quarter the Eagles once again took flight during an 18-7 run led by Kat Hollis and Leonie Snowdon in the last quarter to put the game on ice.

Ladder:                   Uni Rebels 5-3-0, Tracy Village Jets 4-1-3, Lightning 3-3-2, Eagles 3-1-4 & Ansett 0-2-6

Next Week:                        Lightning v Tracy Village Jets 615pm, Uni Rebels v Ansett 7:45pm, Eagles-bye

League MEN –Tracy Village Jets v Razzle

The Tracy Village Jets steam rolled the Razzle 87-43 to remain unbeaten after ten rounds of play in the DBA Challenge Season competition. Travis Ellis returned to the Jet lineup after a week off with an injured finger sustained in a game against the Lightning two weeks ago and he showed no discomfort at all in leading the Jets with 28 points. Young Nick Pattick (19.1ppg) showed no sign of slowing down as a Bomber offensive threat in the scoring department as he added 22 to the Jets total while guard Michael MacLean also hit double figures with 13. The Razzle are struggling to find the form that they began the season with and the loss of big man Kyle Webb to the Uni Rebels doesn’t help either. Charlie Reaper (16) keeps hitting double figures for the green and gold and Ross Vasic (14) is always an outside threat, but they will find it difficult to make the playoffs from here on in.

League Men – Uni Rebels v Ansett

Matt Hunt (pictured above) and Cameron McKenzie insured Ansett would stay in second spot on the ladder with a combined total of 41 points, as the Blues dumped the Uni Rebels 76-56. The close first half proved to be as good as was anticipated, Ansett leading 42-34 through the outside shooting of Hunt (23) and McKenzie (18) as they nailed 5 of the Blues 7 first half treys! Ansett kept on rolling in the second half whereas the Rebels seemed to loose interest, scoring only 22 points for the half. Marcus Ch’ng led the Rebels with 20 while team mate Jarrod Sheppard (5 of 20 from the field) could only manage 12 against his counterparts who left him with very little space to operate in.

League Men – Warriors v Eagles

It took the Eagles three quarters before they took to the air to fly ahead of a tenacious Warrior side intent on upset. The Eagles won the contest 71-61, but it wasn’t until the last quarter when the birds flew away with the game. The Warriors played steady enough in the first half to lead 37-35 at the major break. The slim lead was led by Jay Johnson who finished the game with a team and game high 18 points with Tendayi Muyambi contributing 13. After the break, however, the Eagles gathered momentum behind Daniel Reid – photo above - (12 @ 83% from the field-5 from 6 shots) and Henry Bui (13) as they outscored the Warriors 36-24 in the second half for the win…a 19-9 run in the last quarter being the deciding factor. Court captain Timmy Duggan leading the Eagle scoring with 16.

Ladder:       Tracy Village Jets 8-1-0, Ansett 5-2-2, Eagles 4-2-3, Uni Rebels 3-2-3, Razzle 2-2-5, Warriors 2-2-4 & Lightning 0-1-7

Next Week:    Uni Rebels v Razzle 6:15pm, Warriors v Tracy Village Jets 7:45pm, Lightning v Ansett 9:15pm, Eagles-bye
