Round Eleven– Challenge Season

League WOMEN – Uni Rebels v Ansett

Jaylene Bonson was almost unstoppable during the Uni Rebels thumping of Ansett 100-48. Bonson weaved her way through Ansett for a season high 38 points, 18 in the first half and 20 in the second. Ansett just didn’t have the firepower to match the Rebels as only Jennifer Kinsella reached double figures for the game with 11. Justine Schmidt (15) & Michelle Friel (13) helped Bonson in the first half with an added 17pts and in the second half Trish Graham lit up the score board with 13 of her total as she joined in the action. Ansett slipped behind almost immediately, trailing 13-5 after five minutes of play and never gathered enough momentum to challenge the Rebels. The Rebels had a hefty advantage in shooting percentage, finishing the game with a 44% average from the field while Ansett was a lowly 22%.

League Women – Lightning v Tracy Village Jets

Tracy Village Jets upended the Lightning 55-33 to claim outright second place on the Darwin Basketball Association Challenge Season ladder. The Jets handed the Lightning their second loss in a row, something that hasn’t happened too often in the last three years. Jet Annabelle Harbison was given the task of trying to contain Lightning’s leading scorer Claire O’Bryan (19.3ppg), a job most players would not relish. However, Harbison did enough to upset the game plan of Lightning by hounding O’Bryan all over the court, essentially taking the rest of the team out of the game despite O’Bryan finishing with a team high 16. With O’Bryan finding it difficult to bring the rest of the team into the action the outcome was inevitable. The Jets led by as many as 22pt during the game and hit 32% from the field to 20% for Lightning. Keisha Tinley led from the front for the Jets with 14 while Tara Carroll and Demi Cubillo hit 11 each.

Ladder:                   Uni Rebels 6-3-0, Tracy Village Jets 5-1-3, Lightning 3-3-3, Eagles 3-1-4 & Ansett 0-2-7

Next Week:                        Eagles v Ansett 6:15pm, Lightning v Uni Rebels 7:45pm, Tracy Village Jets-bye

League MEN –Tracy Village Jets v Warriors

The Tracy Village Jet juggernaut kept rolling along as the Bombers ran roughshod over the Warriors for an 88-54 victory to keep their record unblemished half way through the DBA Challenge Season. The youth of the team took charge this time around with Liam MacLachlan hitting a team high 22 followed closely by Nick Pattrick with 20. The two speedsters took it to the Warriors as they drove to the rim and peppered the hoop from outside throughout the encounter. MacLachlan hit 8/11 (73%) from the field and 6/9 from the charity stripe while the team hit 51% from the field to the Warriors 27%. Jay Johnson led the Warriors with 19 @ 42% shooting and Robert Oliver hit 10, but there was a distinct lack of support from the rest of the team. Travis Ellis and Ryan Marshall from the Jets hit double figures as well with 16 and 10…Ellis still leads the Jets in ppg with 22.6, second in the DBA as he trails Jarrod Sheppard from the Rebels who sits on 27ppg.

League Men – Lightning v Ansett

Ansett had the lead for all but 30 seconds of their 56-46 win over the Lightning. The Blues hung on to win in a tight match and had led by as much as 13 despite the return of American import Evan Brown to the Lightning lineup. The Blues had built up enough of a buffer during a 19-7 first quarter scoring spree that enabled them to come away with the points and a firm grip on second spot on the League ladder. Guard Tom Hunt led the way for Ansett with 13. Jake Feeney and Cameron McKenzie chipped in with 12 and 10. For Lightning, who have yet to make their mark in the win column, Brown had 12 and Jesse Bell 10.

League Men – Uni Rebels v Razzle

The Uni Rebels made easy work of the Razzle defense for a straightforward 76-52 win that put them into a two way tie for third place on the ladder. The Rebels handled Razzle’s attempt to make a game of it apart from a second half uprising by the hot handed Ross Vasic who hit 23 of his game high 27 (including 7 treys in the last half-37% from outside the arc). Rebels had built up a 38-14 half time lead behind the efforts of Marcus Ch’ng (16) and former Razzle player Kyle Webb (14) and the gap they established never looked like being closed. Jarrod Sheppard also put up double figures for the Rebels, hitting 14 of his 17 points in the last half.

Ladder:       Tracy Village Jets 9-1-0, Ansett 6-2-2, Eagles & Uni Rebels 4-2-3, Razzle 2-2-6, Warriors 2-2-5 & Lightning 0-1-8

Saturday:   Warriors v Uni Rebels 5:00pm, Lightning v Razzle 6:30pm, Eagles v Tracy Village Jets 8:00pm & Ansett-bye

Next Week:    Lightning v Warriors 6:15pm, Eagles v Uni Rebels 7:45pm, Ansett v Razzle 9:15pm & Tracy Village Jets-bye
