Round Seventeen– Challenge Season

Round Eighteen will be played on the 17th of May after the Arafura Games finish

League WOMEN – Lightning v Ansett

Lightning stayed in the hunt for the double chance with a lopsided 72-33 win against cellar dwellars Ansett in Tuesday nights DBA Challenge Season action. Claire O’Bryan (photo at left) has been running hot in the last four rounds of play scoring 113pts @ a 28ppg clip and she displayed her determination to score in the second quarter when she scored all of Lightning’s 12 points! Ansett kept the contest close in the first quarter, trailing by only two 11-13, but Lightning bolted away after that through O’Bryan’s efforts taking a 25-17 half time lead. Lightning then pulled steadily away in the second half with a 47-16 run against the outplayed Blues. Carla Jones and Kia Bond fought hard to keep Ansett in touch, but O’Bryan’s hot hand (38 points) and the support she got from Courtney Althouse (14) ensured Lightning had the game well and truly wrapped up.

League Women – Eagles v Tracy Village Jets

The Tracy Village Jets kept their advantage over Lightning in the battle for second place with a convincing 70-43 win against the struggling Eagles who are just hanging on to fourth place. Georgii Howlett hit a season high 22 to help the Bombers post their 8th win of the competition. The Jets wasted no time getting into their stride as they powered past the Eagles with a 23-7 first quarter blast that the Eagles never recovered from. Another burst of 20-9 in the second quarter, with Tara Carroll (12) adding to the point scoring gave the Jets a 43-16 half time lead that virtually put the game out of reach for the ineffective Eagles. Greta Hollis-Stephensen put up 14pts while Leonie Snowdon and Megan Fitzpatrick added 12 and 10. A big game looms for the Eagles after the Arafura Games as they play Ansett in a must win game on the 17th of May.

     Ladder:      Uni Rebels 10-3-0, Tracy Village Jets 8-1-5 & Lightning 7-3-4, Eagles 3-1-9 &    Ansett 1-2-11

League MEN –Tracy Village Jets v Razzle

Another round and another win for the Tracy Village Jets as they easily accounted for the Razzle 80-53 to push their win streak out to 14. The Razzle surprisingly stayed with the Jets in the first quarter as they kept within one point 15-14, but the Bombers stepped it up another gear in the second quarter to take a 37-26 lead at half time thanks to some inspired play from Nick Pattrick (18) and Daniel Miller. When captain Michael MacLean joined in the fray in the last quarter (10 of his 18pts) the game became a rout despite the effort from the green and gold’s James Panton who led all scorers for the game with 20. Charlie Reaper added 11, but he and Panton were the lone standouts for the Razzle as they succumbed to the relentless pressure from the Jets. Liam MacLachlan chipped in with 13 for the Jets.

League Men – Eagles v Warriors

For the second round in a row the Eagles have soared past the ton, this time to the tune of a 108-71 drubbing of the Warriors. The birds held the lead for the whole game as they enjoyed another scoring fest with Shane Harrison putting back to back 20+ point games on record for the first time in his League career. Daniel Reid also topped 20 for a season high with Buster Perkins (19), Joseph Johnson (14) and Alex Lenart (11) all adding to the Warriors woes. The Warriors Jay Johnson also remained consistent with his scoring this season with a game high 29 followed by Rob Oliver (20) and Justin Costello (14), but the Warriors just couldn’t match it with the Eagles who flew away with the game with a 41-20 run in the last quarter.

League Men – Ansett v Uni Rebels

The scoring tandem of Andre Moss (21) and Aaaron Richie (16) combined for 37 points as they led the Uni Rebels to a close 63-53 win against Ansett. The Blues held the advantage at half time 33-25 due mainly to the accurate shooting of Bryce Whitaker who hit 15 of his team high 21. However, after the break the Rebels got on a roll, shutting down Whitaker and the rest of the Blues while lighting up the score board themselves with Marcus Ch’ng (11) lending support to Moss and Richie. The loss for Ansett was the third in a row and the slipping Blues now find that they are in a tie with the Eagles for second place with the surging Rebels looking to overhaul both teams who now occupy the coveted second place on the ladder. With only 4 rounds to play the end of the season should be a ripper when the DBA Challenge Season resumes after the Arafura Games which begin this coming weekend.

Ladder:       Tracy Village Jets 14-1-0, Ansett 8-2-5, Eagles 8-2-5, Uni Rebels 7-2-5, Warriors 3-2-9, Lightning 3-1-10, Razzle & 2-2-11

Next Week 17 May:   Razzle v Uni Rebels 6:15pm, Tracy Village Jets v Warriors 7:45pm, Ansett  v Lightning 9:15pm, Eagles-Bye
