League Women –Tracy Village Jets v Ansett

Ansett edged a game closer to first place as they upset the Tracy Village Jets 58-54. The morale boosting win gives the Blues a share of second place with the Bombers and also gives them a shot at the competition lead when they next meet the Uni Rebels (Rd 16). Lauren Flanegan nailed five treys during the game giving her a team and game high 19 points as she combined with Sam Drescher (17 @ 22.8ppg) to finally get another win up over the Jets (Ansett lead the seasons series 2-1). Ansett built up a sizeable buffer at half time, leading 34-20, but then had to withstand a second half rally by the Bombers as they chipped away at the Ansett lead. Demi Cubillo (8.4ppg) hit a season and team high 20 to lead the Bombers with support from Georgii Howlett (14 @ 18.2ppg) and Kylie Duggan (10), but it wasn’t quite enough to overhaul the Blues.

Uni Rebels v Lightning

The Uni Rebels did it easy against the outgunned Lightning, beating them 77-43 to give them sole possession of first place on the competition ladder after 13 rounds of play. Tamara Sheppard hit 9 of her team and game high 19 in the first quarter as the Rebels set up a 15-8 lead. Lightning struck back in the second quarter to keep the game close at half time, trailing by 10 at 37-27, however the third quarter was a blow out by the Rebels as they powered away during a 26-7 run that put the game out of reach of the Lightning. Michelle Friel from the Rebels added 15, Jamie Lee-Peris 13 and Vanessa Kurnoth 12 (4 treys…all in the third quarter!). No one from Lighting hit double figures but the best was Emma Carbone with 9.

Warriors v Eagles

The Eagles grabbed 4th place on their own with a solid 71-46 win against the Warriors, avenging their loss to the Maroons in Round 8. The Eagles enjoyed their biggest scoring output of this season. Five players hit double figures for the Birds with 18 coming from the hands of Megan Fitzpatrick, 14 from Lillian Williams, 13 from Rachel Watchorn and 12 each from Katherine Hollis & Barbara Teakle. The Eagles raced away to a 25-12 first quarter lead and steadily built up the gap, finishing with a strong 19-7 run in the last quarter. Jennifer Kinsella led the Warriors with 14 followed by 13 from Roanna Edwards.

League MEN – Eagles v Ansett

Ansett dumped the Eagles 70-59 to remain on top of the DBA Championship Season standings after Round 12. Daniel Florance took game scoring honour’s with 26 for the Blues with support coming from Rashad Chase who pumped in 23. Apart from a second quarter lapse from the Eagles the two teams were evenly matched. Ansett ripped into the Eagles in the second quarter when Florance and Matt Hunt teamed up for 12pts as the Blues went on a 17-9 scoring run that put them on top 32-22. That buffer was to remain to the end. The defense from Ansett proved the winner with Eagle point scoring machine Buster Perkins held to just 9pts for the game, well below his 27.5ppg average. Larry Williams provided 24 and Shane Harrison added 11 for the Eagles, but without the addition of Perkin’s normal point production the Birds struggled.

Uni Rebels v Tracy Village Jets

The Uni Rebels thumped the Tracy Village Jets 93-66 for their third win in a row and 10th overall. The Rebels hit 20+ points in each quarter as they steadily pulled away from the Bombers, despite a game high 33 from Travis Ellis who was knocking em’ down from everywhere (including 4 treys). However, only one other Jet made it into double figures and that was captain Michael MacLean with 10. The Rebels on the other hand had five players in double digits with Andre’ Moss setting the pace with 30. Michael Jones had 21, Zane Meehl 18, Jarrod Sheppard 13 and Marcus Ch’ng 11. The Jets trailed 45-39 at half time, but after the break the Rebels went on with the game…scoring 48-27 in the second half.

Warriors v Lightning

Jesse Bell carried over his hot hand from last Tuesday night’s game to help the Lightning to a 84-48 win against the Warriors. Bell and team mate Thomas Godwin (8.2ppg) shared game highs with 21 points each as Lightning won only their second game of the season, but it got them off the bottom of the ladder. The Warriors couldn’t stay with Lightning in the first quarter as the Silver & Black raced away to a 24-9 lead, Godwin hitting 7 of his 21 in the quarter. Warriors matched Lightning almost basket for basket in the second quarter, but after the break Lightning set off on a 26-7 run that put the game away. Ben Muvirmi & Eric Klenke shared team high points for the Warriors with 10 each.

Ladder:       Ansett 12-1, Uni Rebels 10-3, Eagles & Tracy Village Jets 7-6, Lightning 2-11 & Warriors 1-12
