League Women –Tracy Village Jets v Uni Rebels

The Uni Rebels wasted no time making their intentions known in their 68-48 win over the Tracy Village Jets. Michelle Friel (15) led a 25-4 scoring run in the first quarter that put the Jets behind the eight ball right from the beginning. Friel, along with Tamara Sheppard (16) and Jamie Lee-Peris (14), pushed the ball up court at every opportunity keeping the Jets on the back foot and not allowing them to get settled. The Bombers lit it up in the second quarter as they out scored the Rebels 21-13 with Georgii Howlett hitting 11 of her team high 18 and Kylie Duggan adding 7 of her game total of 13. The half time score favoured the Rebels 38-25. The Jets continued their good defense in the third quarter once again out scoring the Rebels 15-13, getting a little help from the poor shooting of the Rebels from the free throw line where they were a dismal 6 for 20 chances. The last quarter was all Rebels as they romped home with a 17-8 run led by Edith Boundry and Friel that sealed the game and kept them in first place on the competition ladder. The Rebels hit 39% of their field goals compared to just 29% for the Jets.

Eagles v Ansett

Ansett almost held the Eagles scoreless in the last quarter to break open a tightly contested game for a big 60-46 win. With the game in the balance after three quarters of play the Blues ran over the Eagles with a 17-2 scoring run in the last quarter that left the Birds shaking their heads in disbelief. Ansett looked to be on their game in the first quarter taking a handy lead of 20-12 into the second quarter, but the Eagles took wing and narrowed the gap to just 4 points at 30-26 at half time. The Eagles overhauled the Blues in the third quarter to grab a 44-43 lead and looked set for a minor upset, but then watched in frustration as Ansett hit the afterburners and soared away to victory. Sam Drescher led the Blues with 20 but had plenty of help from the team as Olivia Birkett (7ppg) & Lauren Flanegan (9.31ppg) added 11 each and Kia Bond hit 10. For the Eagles Rachel Watchorn was best with 13 and Megan Fitzpatrick had 11.

Warriors v Lightning

The Warriors stormed back in the second half to record a narrow 33-32 win over the Lightning. The Lightning had looked to be in a comfortable position at half time leading 22-14 thanks to the efforts from Kelli Sealy who had popped 8 of her team and game high 11 points and Chelsea Cook who finished with 9. But after the break the wheels fell off for the Lightning as the Warriors slowly worked themselves back into the game by exerting more defensive pressure and finally hitting some scoring opportunities. A free throw by Roanna Edwards near the end of the game proved to be the difference as the clock wound down. Chie Adachi was the best for the Warriors with 9 points and Kate Smythe had 7.

Ladder:                                           Uni Rebels 12-2, Ansett 11-3, Tracy Village Jets 10-4, Eagles 4-10, Lightning 3-11 & Warriors 2-12

Next Week:                                    Warriors v Ansett 6:15pm, Lightning v Tracy Village Jets 7:45pm & Eagles v Uni Rebels 9:15pm

League MEN – Ansett v Lightning

The Blues from Ansett demoralized the Lightning with a 122-57 win that keeps them two games ahead of last year’s defending champs, the Uni Rebels. Ansett snuffed out any chance Lightning had of an upset with 37-12 first quarter run led by Matt Hunt and Rashad Chase who will now turn their focus ahead to next week’s game with the Rebels. Hunt finished up with 19 points, Chase 23 and the Blues leading point scorer Daniel Florance (20.3ppg) had a game high 25. Seven Ansett players hit double figures. For Lightning Jesse Bell continued his assault on the hoop with another high scoring game, his third in a row, as he hit 17 with Tony Halikos and Brodie Hertel chipping in with 12 each.

Uni Rebels v Warriors

The Uni Rebels are looking ominous as the DBA Championship Season moves into the last six rounds of the competition. The Rebels (52% from the field) dumped the Warriors 116-75, once again getting a number of players into double figures. Zane Meehl & Michael Jones tallied 26 points each, while Andre’ Moss (36.2ppg) hit 21, Jarrod Sheppard 19 and Jake Kirby 16. With the addition of Meehl (9 assists) and Jones (9 rbs 6 assists) into the Rebel line-up much of the scoring burden has been lifted from the shoulder’s of Moss (10 rebounds), who leads the League in scoring, but with the scoring now spread around the team the Rebels are looking good for the playoffs. The defending champions will be out to grab a win from Ansett next week (Ansett leads this season’s series 2-0 with 2 games to play against the Rebels before the playoffs). The Warriors put up a bit of a scrap throughout this game, but they never got close despite having four players in double figures. 32 turnovers did not help their cause either. Warrior Eric Klenke had 19 points, Rohan Cropley 17, Ben Muvirimi 12 & Travis Borsi 11.

Eagles v Tracy Village Jets

The Tracy Village Jets leap-frogged over the Eagles on the ladder with a close fought 90-83 victory. Travis Ellis stayed in the scoring groove with another +30 game, finishing this one with a game high 31 to lead the Bombers, but it was also the return to the high scoring sheet for Michael MacLean (11ppg) who had 20 (his biggest effort since the 3rd Round) and Clinton Kononen who nailed 12 (his best so far). The teams were so evenly matched that it wasn’t until the last quarter that the Jets made a break. Half time scores were locked at 41 each and at the end of three quarters the score line was 61 all! Eagle Buster Perkins (25.8ppg) got back on track after last week’s poor scoring effort to hit 22 along with Joseph Johnson (11ppg) who also hit 22. Shane Harrison & Larry Williams added 12 each, but the last quarter surge by Bomber captain MacLean and Ellis (25.3ppg) was timed to perfection as they claimed their 8th win of the season and sole possession of third place on the ladder.

Ladder:                   Ansett 13-1, Uni Rebels 11-3, Tracy Village Jets 8-6, Eagles 7-7, Lightning 2-12 & Warriors 1-13

Next Week:               Eagles v Lightning 6:15pm, Tracy Village Jets v Warriors 7:45pm                                    Ansett v Uni Rebels 9:15pm
