League Women –Ansett v Tracy Village Jets

Ansett got on top of the Tracy Village Jets early, fell behind, and then rallied again for a narrow 52-47 win in Round 18 of the DBA Championship Season competition. Sam Drescher showed her class as the League’s leading scorer by pumping in the last 13 points for the Blues as they slipped by the Bombers for the third straight time this season. Drescher (23ppg) hit 26 of her game and season high 35 in the second half as Ansett held off the challenges from the Jets. The Bombers held the lead at half time 35-31 thanks to the good shooting from Kylie Duggan who is hitting form just before the playoffs. Duggan (10.5ppg) led the Bombers with 18 with Brianna Grazioli adding 9. The third quarter proved to be the turning point when the Blues outscored the Bombers 15-8 to take a lead they never surrendered.

Lightning v Uni Rebels

The Uni Rebels overpowered the Lightning 81-32 to remain tied for the competition lead with only two rounds of play left before the playoffs begin. The Rebels showed no mercy as Jaylene Bonson (16 @ 16.8ppg), Tamara Sheppard (16 @ 18.5ppg) and Jamie Lee-Peris (15 @ 15.8ppg) peppered the hoop for a combined score of 47 points. Delsey Ah Wang also added double figures with 10 while the lone standout for the Lightning was centre Chelsea Cook who had 14. With the Rebels and Ansett tied for first place it looks as if the minor premiership will be decided on percentage points and the Rebels have the upper hand at the moment with 131% to 117 for Ansett.

Eagles v Warriors

Eagles bounced back after their Round 17 loss to the Jets to knock off the Warriors 49-36 to solidify their spot in the playoffs. By securing fourth place on the ladder the Eagles will get another shot at the Jets in the semi-finals in two weeks time. After one quarter of play the Birds and the Warriors were all locked up on 12 points. The Eagles opened up the game slightly with a 14-8 run in the second quarter to lead 26-20 at the half. They added to their buffer in the third quarter with another run of 19-8 sparked by Megan Fitzpatrick (14 @ 12.7ppg) who hit the first 8 points to set them on their way. Leonie Snowdon (8ppg) led the Eagles with 15 points. Colleen Hazeldene and Jennifer Kinsella (who scored all of the Warrior points in the first half) led the way for the Warriors with 14 and 13.

Ladder:                               Uni Rebels & Ansett 15-3, Tracy Village Jets 13-5, Eagles 6-12, Lightning 3-15 & Warriors 2-16

Next Week:                        Lightning v Warriors 6:15pm, Ansett v Eagles 7:45pm & Tracy Village Jets v Uni Rebels 9pm

League MEN – Ansett v Eagles

Ansett took advantage of a great start to their game against the Eagles by posting a 92-83 win that keeps them in first place on the ladder with two rounds to go. A 23-13 first quarter run dominated by Rashad Chase (21.2ppg) caught the Eagles off guard and they never managed to close the gap. The rest of the game was played almost evenly with Ansett able to hold off all the Eagle challenges. Buster Perkins (28) and Larry Williams (32) had big games to combine for 60 of the Eagle points, but the Blues had all the answers as they stayed focused on a chance for their first Championship Season League premiership since 1999. Chase finished with a share of game high honours with 32 points and plenty of support from Matt Hunt (15), Tom Hunt (13 @ 7.4ppg) and Daniel Florance & Adam Miller (12 each). It would appear that the minor premiership is going to come down to whoever wins between the Blues and the Uni Rebels in the last round of play on the 22nd of November.

Tracy Village Jets v Uni Rebels

The Uni Rebels took charge of their game against the Tracy Village Jets early, jumping out to a 25 to 15 first quarter lead before running out winners 97-67. The weaponry that the Rebels bring to a game is amazing when one looks at the number of players (7) averaging in double figures. Andre’ Moss leads the league with 33.3ppg and he topped this game with 41 with Jarrod Sheppard chipping in with 16 @ 12ppg, Michael Jones 14 and Zane Meehl & Marcus Ch’ng (10ea). By half time the score was 48-30 despite the efforts of Jets Travis Ellis (22), Michael MacLean (15) and Liam MacLachlan (16). The Rebels then outscored the Bombers 49-37 in the second half to take home the points.

Lightning v Warriors

Lightning won out in the battle of the two bottom teams trying to stave off the ‘wooden’ spoon. Lightning beat the Warriors fairly easily 92-75 as Jesse Bell enjoyed his best game of the season, a 26 point effort that led a three pronged attack against the Warriors. Karsten Oltrop (14) and Cameron Bailey (13) put up a combined 27 points in support of Bell as they wore down the opposition, winning every quarter. Rohan Cropley top scored for the Warriors with 19 with team mates John Culbertson & Rob Oliver adding 12 each.

Ladder:                   Ansett 16-2, Uni Rebels 15-3, Tracy Village Jets 10-8, Eagles 9-9, Lightning 3-15 & Warriors 1-17

Next Week:               Warriors v Uni Rebels, 6:15pm, Lightning v Ansett 7:45pm & Tracy Village Jets v Eagles 9:15pm
