League Women –Tracy Village Jets v Ansett

The Tracy Village Jets kept their start to the DBA Challenge season unblemished as they edged past a tough Ansett 49-44. The win puts the Jets at 3-0 in a tie with the Uni Rebels whom they clash with in the game of the round next week. This game against Ansett, however, was much closer than anticipated due to the return of Sam Drescher who spent last week on the Gold Coast trialing with the Rollers. Drescher hit a team and game high 14, but it wasn’t enough to offset the effort from the Jets who got 13 from Georgii Howlett and 12 from Kylie Duggan. The Bombers were down 14-17 after one quarter of play, but from the start of the second quarter the defense took charge as the Bombers only allowed 17pts from the Blues over the next two quarters while scoring 27 themselves to lead 41-34 with one quarter to play. Ansett stiffened their defense in the last quarter, holding the Jets to just 8 points, but they failed to bridge the gap, losing for the second time this season.

Eagles v Warriors

The Eagles picked up their second win of the season at the expense of the Warriors who lost 46-32. The Warriors surprised everybody in the first quarter as Jennifer Kinsella (10) & Mel Higgens led a charge that gave the Maroons an 18-11 lead. The outburst of points from the Warriors triggered a wake-up call from the Eagles who immediately responded with a defensive effort that held the Warriors to just single digits in the remaining three quarters. During this time the Birds, led by Trish Graham (19) & Michelle Friel (13) found their shooting range and began to pile on the points. The Eagles overtook the Warriors at the end of the second quarter for a 21-20 lead and never looked back, outscoring the Maroons 25-14 in the second half for the win.

Uni Rebels v Lightning

The Uni Rebels followed up last week’s thrashing of the Warriors with a 77-39 thrashing of Lightning. Lightning was outmanned and outgunned as Tamara Sheppard (22pts including 3 treys) and team mates Jaylene Boundry (18) and Delsey Ah Wang (12) combined for 52pts during the rout. A 23-13 run in the first quarter set up the win for the Rebels who shut down the Lightning offense for the remainder of the game limiting them to single digits in each of the last three quarters. Kelli Sealy again led from the front for Lightning with 11 points.

Next Week:                        Eagles v Ansett 6:15pm, Warriors v Lightning 7:45pm & Uni Rebels v Tracy Village Jets 9:15pm

League MEN –Eagles v Ansett

The cliff-hanger of the season so far was played out between Ansett and the Eagles with the Blues coming out on top with a one point win 64-63. The hero of the game was Jarrod Sheppard who scored the last 9 points of the game for the Blues (ALL of Ansett’s 4th quarter points). Ansett had jump started the game with a blistering 16-6 first quarter run that gave them what looked like a winning margin at that early stage of the game. However, the Eagles dug deep and stayed with the Blues until the last quarter when the Birds pumped in 22 points to cut down Ansett’s 14 point lead to give them a real chance. It was at this point when Sheppard (4 treys) dashed their hopes with a three pointer followed by a free throw that clinched it for the Blues. Sheppard shared game high honour’s with Eagle Joseph Johnson with 20 points each. Jake Feeney and Paul Johnson lent support to Sheppard with 12 and 10 while Henry Bui and Michael Pearce did likewise for Johnson also with 12 & 10.

Warriors v Lightning

Lightning ripped into the Warriors early in their matchup and then powered away for an easy 76-43 win, their first of the season. Jesse Bell (game high 19) lit up the scoreboard at the outset, nailing a three pointer to start the game as Lightning stormed out to a handy 20-8 first quarter lead. Tom Godwin (14) and Dylan De Santis (12) jumped into the action in the second quarter as Lightning built up a 33-18 half time advantage. The Warriors fell into another big hole in the third quarter as Godwin and Ben Streeter (Jets 2006) led a 20-7 run that put the game out of reach for the Maroons. Ben Muvirimi & Josh Potter led the Warriors with 10 & 8.

Eagles v Tracy Village Jets

Uni Rebels pre-advised their forfeit to the Jets due to lack of players.

Ladder:                   Tracy Village Jets 3-0, Ansett & Eagles 2-1, Lightning 1-2, Uni Rebels 1-0-2, & Warriors 0-3

Next Week:    Ansett v Lightning 6:15pm, Eagles v Tracy Village Jets 7:45pm & Uni Rebels v Warriors 9:15pm
