League Women –Tracy Village Jets v Ansett

The League leading Tracy Village Jets got back on track after their shock loss to the Eagles last week. The Bombers didn’t hold back during their convincing 89-33 romp over Ansett, getting big numbers from Kylie Duggan (10.6ppg) and Georgii Howlett (18.1ppg). Duggan led all scorers with 24 and Howlett added 22 as the duo led the Bombers to their 11th win of the season. Duggan hit 13 of her total in a blistering first quarter that left the Blues trailing 31-7 and the game all but wrapped up for the Bombers. The return from injury of Bomber point guard Sam Rioli was also a big confidence booster. Victoria Uhlig (10.5ppg) was the only Blues player to get into double figures, finishing the game with a team high 11.

Uni Rebels v Lightning

The Uni Rebels accounted for Lightning with a 92-27 romp that saw five players hit double figures for the first time this season. After taking a 16-9 first quarter lead the Rebels took it up a notch to put the game away with a 26-10 second quarter run for a very handy 42-19 half time lead. Lightning fell away drastically in the second half as the Rebels charged ahead for the win. Rebel Jaylene Bonson (19.ppg) led all scorers with 22 followed by 19 from Tamara Sheppard, 17 from Delsey Ah Wang, 13 from Lucy Adam and 12 from Edith Boundry. Chelsea Cook had 8 for Lightning and Tahnee Lew Fatt 7.

Warriors v Eagles

The Eagles made sure the Warriors stayed firmly entrenched on the bottom of the ladder with a 69-32 win. Eagle Trish Graham (14.6ppg) dropped a three pointer to start the game and from that point onward the Birds showed no mercy as they flew away to a 30-13 half time lead. Warrior Kate Smythe hit a team high 9, but there wasn’t a lot of firepower from the supporting cast that could have lifted Warrior hopes. The Eagle defense had shut down some of that firepower when they clamped down on the Warrior’s leading scorer, Jennifer Kinsella (10.5ppg), holding her to just two points for the game. Graham finished with a game and team high 13 while Lillian Williams (10.1ppg) chipped in with 12.

Ladder:                               Tracy Village Jets 11-1, Uni Rebels 9-3, Eagles 8-4, Ansett 5-7, Lightning 2-10 & Warriors 2-9-1

Next Week:                        Tracy Village Jets v Uni Rebels 6:15pm, Eagles v Ansett 7:45pm & Warriors v Lightning 9:15pm

League Men – Eagles v Ansett

The Round 13 fixture proved to be lucky for the Eagles as they avenged two prior losses to Ansett by edging past them by the narrowest of margins 78-77. The win gives the Eagles a share of second place on the ladder with the Blues and sets up a meet with the League leading Jets next Tuesday. Fittingly the last bucket of the game by the Eagles was scored by Charles Benning (28.5ppg) who led all scorers with 24. Team mates Buster Perkins (24ppg) and Joseph Johnson (20.3ppg) added 16 and 13, but it was the bench that came up big for the Eagles as they put in that extra effort that got them across the line. The Hunt brothers (Matt & Tom) were firing on all cylinders as they combined for 44 points for the Blues, but in the end the Birds won out, setting the stage for a exciting run into the playoffs that begins next week when the Eagles take on Tracy Village Jets! For the Blues Matt Hunt (17.8ppg) had 23 & Tom Hunt (10.3ppg) had 21.

Uni Rebels v Tracy Village Jets

Travis Ellis (26ppg) once again stood between the Uni Rebels and victory as he led the Tracy Village Jets to a 85-77 win. Ellis, with the support of Brad East (17 @ 7ppg) and Jett Sukcharoen, hit a game high 28 as the Bombers held off all challenges from the Rebels during the physical encounter. The Bombers had powered out to a 31-12 first quarter lead that the Rebels had pegged back with a 27-9 run in the second quarter leaving them trailing by only one point 40-39 at the half. That run was led by Jake Kirby (17) and Adam Yeaman (22). The Rebels then stayed on track in the third quarter with Yeaman hitting the first five baskets of the quarter during a 27-12 run, giving them a 60-52 lead. In the fourth quarter it was the Bombers who staged a dramatic comeback as Sukcharoen (4.78ppg) hit 15 of his 17 points (including 3 treys) in a 33-17 run that put them on track for an exciting win. Rebel Ryan Smith tallied 21 and Marcus Ch’ng added 12.

Warriors v Lightning

Ben Muvirimi led the Warriors to their second win of the competiton, a narrow 55-52 win against Lightning. Muvirimi (8.4ppg) hit 16 for the winners while his teammates Tendayi Muyambi & Rhy Thomas had 10 each. The Warriors held a slim 27-25 half time lead thanks to the hard working Muvirimi, but it wasn’t until the last quarter when the Warriors had to pull out all stops to take home the win. Lighting bolted back in the third quarter with a 15-6 run led by Jesse Bell (19 @ 19.7ppg)that gave Lightning what looked like a winning 40-33 lead. However, the Warriors bounced back with a unlikely 22-12 run led by Thomas and Muyambi that shocked the Lightning and left them wondering where things went wrong.   Cameron Bailey (16.5ppg) added 10 for the Lightning.
