League Women –Uni Rebels v Lightning

Lightning came from behind to hand the Uni Rebels their first loss of the season with a hard fought 50-43 victory that kept them in a tie for first place with the Tracy Village Jets. The Rebels had jumped out to a 15-8 lead after one quarter of play, but the Lightning struck back in the second quarter to trail by 3 at half time 23-20. Lightning won the second half 29-19 with import Starkitsha (Star) Higgins leading the way with 14 points. Lucy Murray added 11 in support. Tamara Sheppard led the Rebels with 14 and their new import Dana Rommel had 10.

Tracy Village Jets v Ansett

The Tracy Village Jets ran past the Blues of Ansett 92-50 to keep a share of first place on the ladder. The transition game of the Bombers was too much for the undermanned Blues who could only field five players for the match. Captain Sam Rioli led the Bombers with a game high 23 followed by 16 from Tara Maxwell, 12 from Tikesa Docherty-Cole and 10 from Keisha Tinley. Sam Drescher hit 21 for the Blues with team-mate Chelsea Cook chipping in with 15.

Palmerston v Eagles

Eagle import Kymira Woodberry hit a season high 26 to lead the Birds to a close 48-43 win against Palmerston. The Eagles started strongly with a 15-5 first quarter, but Palmerston hit back in the second quarter during a 18-6 run that gave them a narrow 23-21 lead at half time. A big third quarter from the Eagles gave them enough of a buffer to hold off Palmerston in the last quarter for their first win of the competition. Woodberry had support from Louise Johnsson with 13 while Jennifer Kinsella was the lone standout for Palmerston in double figures with 16.

Ladder:                                           Tracy Village Jets & Lightning 3-0, Uni Rebels 2-1, Eagles 1-2, Ansett & Palmerston 0-3

Next Week Round 5:                     Lightning v Tracy Village Jets 6:15pm, Eagles v Uni Rebels 7:45pm & Palmerston v Ansett 9:15pm

League Men –Uni Rebels v Tracy Village Jets

In one of the biggest match-ups this season the Tracy Village Jets overcame the Uni Rebels in a double-overtime game 76-73. The Rebels looked likely winners with a three point lead and only seconds remaining, but Michael MacLean (16pts) nailed a running three pointer off the glass after latching onto a deflected pass courtesy of Travis Ellis (game high 24). The desperate shot at end of regulation gave the Bombers another chance to win and they did so in the second overtime after MacLean and Phil Collins (17pts) hit critical shots to finish off the Rebels. The Bombers had taken an early 13-11 lead only to see it slip away as the surging Rebels fought back to gain the upper hand through Matthew Van Pelt, Lucci Cornelius and Jamie Hamill (15 points each). The Rebels were on top at the end of three 52-43 and Hamill was hoping to cap off his 600th League game with a win, but it was denied by the Bombers who powered back in the last quarter to tie it all up forcing the OT’s.

Eagles v Palmerston

The Eagles held off the men from Palmerston with a 75-60 win that keeps them atop the ladder with a 4-0 record, their best start in years. Louis Ilton led the Eagles with 22 points with Jarrod Sheppard adding 18. Both sides were missing a few key starters with Palmerston lacking Shaq Hohipa-Wilson and Errol & Robbie Wilson while the Birds didn’t have Buster Perkins and Joseph Johnson. Despite their absence the game still proved a challenge for both sides. Jesse Bell hit a team and game high 25 for Palmerston while getting support from some of the Div 2 players who were called up to League. Dylan Davis added 11.

Lightning v Razzle

Lightning blew Razzle away with an impressive 109-52 thumping that had six Lightning players in double figures. Former Melbourne Tigers ABA centre Craig Martin hit 23 points as did Cameron Bailey as Lightning grabbed their second win of the season. Razzle used to have enough size to challenge Lightning but with the inclusion of Martin and a couple other players the Lightning can now dominate a bit more inside the keyway. Brendan Dell led Razzle with 14. Ben Cowcher helped out with 11.

Ladder:                                           Eagles 4-0, Uni Rebels 2-2, Palmerston 2-1, Tracy Village Jets & Lightning 2-1, Ansett 0-3, & Razzle 0-4

Next Week Round 5:  Eagles v Tracy Village Jets 6:15pm, Palmerston v Lightning 7:45pm & Razzle v Ansett 9:15pm. Bye-Uni Rebels
