League Women –Tracy Village Jets v Palmerston

The undefeated Tracy Village Jets put a pin in the Palmerston bubble with a dominant display of transition basketball as they upended the Power 80-29. The win brought to an abrupt halt the three game win streak the Power had put together over the last three rounds and extended the Bombers undefeated streak out to 25 games…18 this season. Bomber Captain Sam Rioli hit a team, game and season high 28 points with strong backup from Tikesa Docherty-Cole who had 19 (17 in the second half) and Abby Cubillo who hit 10. A first quarter 20-9 run by the Bombers set the tone for the game and they never looked threatened. The Bombers defensive effort limited the Power to less than double figures in every quarter and they never let up offensively which has been a trait of theirs over the last couple of seasons. Christine Cooper was the only Power player to reach double figures with 12.

Uni Rebels v Ansett

Twenty-four points from Tamara Sheppard led the Uni Rebels to a total wipe-out of Ansett 78-18. The Blues failed to score in the first quarter, trailing 16-0 as Sheppard spearheaded the Rebel charge, hitting 8 of her game high total in the quarter. Rebel court captain Jaylene Boundry hit a season high 18 in support of Sheppard with Dana Rommel adding 17. Playing the lone hand for the Blues was forward Chelsea Cook who hit a team high 12.

Eagles v Lightning

The Lightning made it a clean four game sweep over the Eagles this season beating the Birds 67-45 in their last meeting of this competition. Emma Carbone took team scoring honours with 18 points with Kelli Sealy getting 16 and Ashleigh Houghton 10. The Lightning took a 19-11 first quarter lead and pumped that up to 29-16 at the half time break. The Eagles took a stance in the third quarter with Kymira Woodberry hitting 9 of her game high 26, but despite her best efforts the Lightning still won the quarter 16-15 and pushed the lead out further in the last quarter with a 22-14 run to seal the game.

Ladder:                                                      Tracy Village Jets 18-0, Uni Rebels 12-1-4, Lightning 10-1-7, Ansett 7-11, Palmerston 3-15 & Eagles 3-0-14-1

Next Week Nov. 15th Round 19   Eagles v Tracy Village Jets 6:15pm, Uni Rebels v Palmerston 7:45pm & Lightning v Ansett 9:15pm

League Men –Eagles v Palmerston

Palmerston’s dreams and hopes of their first minor premiership moved one step closer as they knocked off the league leading Eagles 84-78 to be within one game of a share of the lead. And…the teams meet again next Saturday in a game that could decide who the minor premiers will be. With only three games remaining in the regular season wins are a must for both of these sides. The Power is in the driver’s seat with a game in hand. The Power charged away in the first quarter with a 27-16 run led by Jesse Bell (25) and Tendayi Muyambi, but that was short lived as the Birds reversed that score line in the second quarter with a 24-15 run that saw them trailing by just two at the break 42-40. The Power won the third quarter 19-14 and then hung on for the thrilling win as the Eagles flew back with a 24-23 fourth quarter run that wasn’t quite enough to overhaul the Power. Both teams spent a lot of time on the charity stripe with the Birds getting 19 and the Power a whopping 25…the extra six points representing the winning margin at the end of the game. Eagle Louis Ilton top scored for the game with 36 with Buster Perkins adding 11. Shaquille Hohipa-Wilson hit 24 for Palmerston with Aaron Simpson 12 and Eruera McCullough 11.

Uni Rebels v Tracy Village Jets

Another upset on the night was the Uni Rebels 88-79 victory over the Tracy Village Jets. The win keeps the Rebels slim chances of a final four playoff spot alive, but they will have to win all their remaining games and rely on teams ahead of them to beat the Bombers. The two teams meet next Saturday in what might be the last hope for the Rebels. The Rebels stormed back in the last quarter to win this match, outscoring the Bombers 32-19 after trailing 60-56 after three quarters of play. With playoff aspirations hanging by a thread Matt Van Pelt, Jake Kirby and Matt Fagg led the last quarter Rebel assault against the Bombers and came out victorious. Van Pelt let the Rebels with 24 points Fagg had 18, Kirby 15 and Lucci Cornelius 11. Travis Ellis led the Bombers with a game high 27, Daniel Miller hit 12 and Alex Weetra 11.

Razzle v Lightning

Lightning pipped Razzle at the post with a close 70-66 win denying the green and gold a chance for their first win of the season. Not much separated the teams during the match with the Razzle holding a one point advantage at the half 36-35. The third quarter proved pivotal with the Lightning grabbing a 57-53 lead through the drive and inspiration of coach Chris Charman (18) who nailed three treys during a 22-17 run. Rob Oliver (18) gave it a good shot for the green and gold in the last quarter, hitting the last six points for them, but the Lightning stole the show with Cameron Bailey (24) hitting a late bucket and then adding a free throw. Brendan Dell & James Panton also hit double figures for Razzle with 16 & 12. The teams meet again next Saturday.

Ladder:                                           Eagles 12-3, Palmerston 11-3, Ansett 9-6, Tracy Village Jets 9-5, Uni Rebels 7-8, Lightning 3-11 & Razzle 0-15
