League Women –Eagles v Tracy Village Jets

The Tracy Village Jets knocked off the pesky Eagles 72-57, but they had to work at it to keep their undefeated streak intact. Jet Sam Rioli and Tania Dhu led the Bombers with 19 and 18, but it took a 23-15 run in the third quarter to open the game up. Kymira Woodberry kept the Birds in the game with a team and game high 29, 18 of her total coming in the first half. The Jets held a slim 31-28 half time lead through the efforts of Demi Cubillo and Dhu, despite the determination of Woodberry and the Birds. Tara Maxwell also hit double figures for the Bombers with 11 while Taylah Hendy hit 12 and Lillian Williams 10 for the Birds. The Jets now have a 26 game winning streak and with a win next Friday will tie a 27 game winning streak set by the Eagles over two seasons in 2007/8.

Uni Rebels v Palmerston

Dana Rommel, Chantelle Lee and Jaylene Bonson accounted for 36 of the Uni Rebel points in their 56-34 win against the Palmerston Power Friday night. The Rebels grabbed an early 10-5 lead, but couldn’t shake the Power as they strung together a 13-12 second quarter run led by Christine Cooper to trail by just 4 at the break 22-18. Jaylene Bonson ignited a 16-9 third quarter run that left the Power trailing by 11 at 38-27 with a quarter to play. Veteran Chantelle Lee (11) took over in the last quarter sparking an 18-7 run, hitting 9 of her total points in the quarter. Rommel led the Rebels with 15 and Bonson had 10. Cooper finished up in double figures for the Power with 12.

Lightning v Ansett

The return of a number of starters to the Ansett line-up propelled them to a 45-36 win against the Lightning. Chelsea Cook, who has started every game for the Blues, had support this time round from Sam Drescher (13) and Lauren Flanegan (9) as they lifted their game in the second half to pull away from the tenacious Lightning who were missing a number of key players from their line-up this week. The Blues held just a two point advantage at the major break, but opened up the gap in the second half with a 21-14 run led by 10 points from Cook in the last quarter for the victory. Cook finished with a team high 16 while scoring honours went to Starkitsha Higgins from the Lightning with 19. Import Higgins has just returned from the injured list and should play a big part in Lightning’s playoff chances.

Ladder:                                             Tracy Village Jets 19-0, Uni Rebels 13-1-4, Lightning 10-1-8, Ansett 8-11, Palmerston 3-16 & Eagles 3-0-15-1

Next Week Nov. 22nd Round 20  Lightning v Uni Rebels 6:15pm, Ansett v Tracy Village Jets 7:45pm & Eagles v Palmerston 9:15pm

League Men –Eagles v Uni Rebels

Ernest Holmes broke out for the Eagles with his best of the season, leading the Birds with a game high 26 as they dumped the Uni Rebels 76-66 to hang on to first place on the ladder. The loss by the Rebels drops them out of the playoff race for this season while the Eagles won’t know until next Friday if they are the minor premiers or not. The Eagles have the bye next week and Palmerston is still in contention for the premiership. Holmes got plenty of support from Jessie Williams-Hook 16, Louis Ilton 14 and Chris Stewart with 12 and a swagg full of rebounds. The first three quarters were tight and it took until the last quarter for the Eagles to get on top of the determined Rebels. The Birds outscored the Rebels 18-11 in the final quarter behind the hot handed Williams-Hook who hit 8 of his total to trigger the run. Matt Fagg hit 17 for the Rebels with help from Jermaine Lattimore 14, Matt Van Pelt 13 and Lucci Cornelius 11.

Palmerston v Ansett

Ansett pulled off a minor upset with a 72-63 come from behind win against second placed Palmerston. The Blues held a 38-31 half time lead due to the sharpshooting of Matthew Barrett who nailed 15 of his 22 points in the first half. However, after the break Jesse Bell (25) and Shaquille Hohipa-Wilson (17) led a fight-back by the Power as they shot back into the picture with a 23-11 run for a 54-49 lead heading into the last quarter. The hope was short lived though as John King (16), Barrett and Jake Feeney (12) led the fight-back to claim the win.

Lightning v Tracy Village Jets

Travis Ellis knocked down a game high 26 points to lead the Tracy Village Jets to an 84-68 win over the Lightning. The win was a double celebration as Bomber Daniel Miller hit a milestone 400 League games played. Ellis is slowly closing in on a milestone of his own, the DBA scoring record of 8746 career points, and if he doesn’t break it in the playoffs he surely will early in next year’s Challenge Season. He is after this game 97 points short of tying it. The Bombers lifted off early with a 35-16 first quarter explosion (20 by Ellis) that pointed towards an early capitulation by the Lightning, but they fought back with a 23-11 surge of their own in the second quarter to be only 7pts in arrears at the half. The patented third quarter Bomber blow-out didn’t eventuate as both sides hit 13 in the quarter. The Bombers brought it all home with a 25-16 last quarter run for the win. Ellis had support from four others in double figures while Christian Williams led Lightning with 18 and Cameron Bailey had 12.

Ladder:                                              Eagles 13-3, Palmerston 11-4, Ansett 10-6, Tracy Village Jets 10-5, Uni Rebels 7-9, Lightning 3-12 & Razzle 0-15

Next Game Nov. 22nd Round 21:     Tracy Village Jets v Ansett 6:15pm, Lightning v Uni Rebels 7:45pm & Palmerston v Razzle 9:15pm. Bye-Eagles
