League Women Round 10 –Uni Rebels v Eagles

Jaylene Bonson scored 19 points to lead the Uni Rebels to a 78-26 victory over the undermanned Eagles who only had five players suited up. Bonson’s big game lifted the Rebels into a tie with the Eagles for third place on the ladder and would have lifted the confidence of the Rebels who suffered a heavy loss to the league leading Jets last week. Danielle Ponter and Kahlisha Rioli got the Rebels off to a solid start in the first quarter as the Rebels charged out to a 13-2 lead that put the Eagles on the back foot early, indicating a long night for them. Ponter finished with 15 points for the Rebels with Lucy Adam adding 10. Only Lillian Williams managed to break into double figures for the Birds with 13. The Rebels managed to shut down the Eagles live wire guard Michelle Friel, holding her to just 3 points. She was averaging 18.5ppg.

Lightning v Tracy Village Jets

The Tracy Village Jets racked up win number ten in a row as they bolted past the Lightning 82-45 to remain undefeated for this season. Another sparkling game from Abby Cubillo (21 @ 14ppg) and court captain Sam Rioli (17 @ 21.8ppg) proved too much of an obstacle for the Lightning as they fell behind early, trailing 22-6 at the first break. Lightning’s new recruit, Kymira Woodberry, (ex-Eagle from last season), tried to keep it close, but despite outscoring all players for the game with 26 it was too much to ask. Lightning just couldn’t keep up. The Bombers stayed with their game plan and just kept piling on the points. Erin Geer and Tania Dhu also hit double figures for the Bombers with 16 and 14.

Ansett v Palmerston

Palmerston won the women’s ‘cliff-hanger’ of the night with a 54-52 win over Ansett that denied the Blues their second win of the competition. Brielle Felton only hit 8 points for the game, but the her last two buckets sealed the game for the Power as time was winding down and the Blues pressing for the win. Christine Cooper (14) and Tanasha Walters (13) led the Power, but it was Felton that turned out to be the hero. Liz Paice played her best game of the season to finish up with a game and team high 19 for the Blues and she had support from Carla Jones who had season high 13.

Next week Round 11:       Palmerston v Tracy Village Jets 6:15pm, Eagles v Lightning 7:45pm & Ansett v Uni Rebels 9:15pm

Rounds 3, 6 & 7 have been cancelled.

League Men –Palmerston v Ansett

Matt Hunt led the Blues from Ansett to a convincing 84-58 win against Palmerston to jump into a tie for first place on the ladder after seven completed rounds. The Blues stamped their authority on the game early with a 24-16 run in the first quarter led by Hunt (16.8ppg) who hit 11 of his team high 19 points. They continued to apply the pressure on the Power with an 18-8 run in the second quarter for a game winning half time lead of 42-24. They never looked back. The Power mounted a challenge in the last quarter, outscoring the Blues 26-19, but it was way too late. Aaron Simpson hit 11 of his team and game high total 22 in the last quarter for the Power with back up from Bradley Jachmann (12) and Tendayi Muyambi (10). Jake Feeney and Mat Van Pelt hit 14 each in backing up Hunt.

Tracy Village Jets v Uni Rebels

The men’s ‘cliff-hanger’ was just that with the Tracy Village Jets notching up only their second win of the season, a 80-79 nail-biter against the Uni Rebels that was won on the charity stripe by Jayden Adams who potted two free throws for the victory. The Bombers held just a two point lead at half time, 27-25, but they had upped that to 55-46 at three quarter time and looked to be on their way to an easy win. However, the Rebels launched a rousing charge led by John King and Jake Kirby (16). King knocked down 17 points and Kirby 12 in the last quarter to get the Rebels within two of victory. King (21ppg) finished with a season and league high 38 points to wrest this season’s record from team mate Tim Morris who only set the record last week with 37. Darren Weetra led the Bombers with a team high 21, getting plenty of help from Alex Weetra (13) and Adams who ended up on 11 (5 of the last six team points!).

Eagles v Razzle

The Eagles soared over the Razzle 67-46 to secure third place on the ladder. James Silvie and Chris Stewart propelled the Birds to victory in the first quarter during a 22-8 run that caught the green and gold napping. Razzle failed to rise to the challenge in the second quarter and fell further behind to trail 35-12 at half time…game over. Silvie (21ppg) led all scorers with 22 and he had support from Jesse Williams-Hook (16.5ppg) who hit 20 while Stewart finished with 9. Brendan Dell had a season high 15 for the green and gold with Rob Oliver chipping in with 13.

Ladder after Round 10:                   Lightning & Ansett 5-2, Eagles 4-3, Uni Rebels & Palmerston 3-3, Tracy Village Jets 2-3 & Razzle 0-7

Next week Round 11:                    Tracy Village Jets v Eagles 6:15pm, Palmerston v Razzle 7:45pm & Lightning v Uni Rebels 9:15pm. Bye: Ansett

Rounds 3, 6 & 7 have been cancelled.
