Women Round 13 – Uni Rebels v Lightning

A torrid last quarter by the Uni Rebels powered them past the tenacious Lightning 68-43 in the Women’s League game of the night. The Red White & Blues trampled the Lightning in the last quarter with a 22-7 run that broke open the expected close contest. The Rebels led 38-27 at half time thanks to the accurate shooting of Jaylene Bonson (13.8ppg) who hit 14 of her team high 19 in the first half. The loss of top scorer Kymira Woodberry (26ppg) to a hand injury in the second quarter did not help Lightning’s cause at all. Despite the loss of Woodberry Lightning regrouped and pulled back one point in a low scoring third quarter before the flood gates opened up for the Rebels in the final quarter. The Rebels put up 5 three pointers in the last term and shut down the scoring of the Lightning to run away easy winners in the end. Jaylene Boundry (3 treys in the last quarter) and Tamara Sheppard (20.4ppg) hit 15 each in support of Bonson while Woodberry topped the scoring for the Lightning with 16. It is not known at this stage whether Woodberry will suit up for next week’s game.

Tracy Village Jets v Ansett

The League leading Tracy Village Jets ran their win streak out to 13 with a thumping 75-31 win against Ansett. The undefeated Bombers had four players in double figures with Abby Cubillo (16.4ppg) leading the pack with 19, Erin Geer 17, Sam Rioli 16 and Demi Cubillo 15. The Bombers almost blanked the youthful Ansett side in the first quarter during a 17-3 run. A 25-10 second quarter put the game out of reach of the Blues. Julia Woods and Elizabeth Paice hit 10 each for Ansett.

Palmerston v Eagles

Palmerston knocked off the struggling Eagles 62-41, handing them their fourth loss in a row. The Birds are sitting in fourth place on the ladder, but it is a precarious position to be in with the obvious challenge coming from the Lightning who sit just two games behind them. Palmerston wasted no time in establishing their control of the game with a 14-6 first quarter run and then adding to it in the second quarter for a handy 31-18 half time lead. The lead was more than enough to hold off the Eagles who slipped further behind as the game progressed. Stephanie Pye (9.5ppg) dropped in 16 to lead the Power with support from Jennifer Kinsella with 10. Lillian Williams (11.2ppg) from the Eagles led all scorers with a game high 23, her best of the season. Marika Hart added 12.

League Men –Uni Rebels v Eagles

The men’s game of the night was a cracker with the Uni Rebels edging past the Eagles 73-61 in their first meeting of this season. It was a huge boost for the Rebels who now have a chance to make the four with 5 rounds remaining before playoffs. They sit outside the four just one game behind Palmerston. Tim Morris and John King did most of the damage for the Rebels with 31 and 27 points to their names while the defense limited the Birds leading scorer, Eagle James Silvie (25.4ppg) to just 12 points. Morris (24ppg) and King (26.6ppg) are becoming a dominant duo for the Rebels as they push for playoff contention. The Rebels shot out to a 21-14 first quarter lead, but saw that disappear before a concerted effort from the Birds who only trailed by one point at half time 36-35. After a tight third quarter the Rebels finally managed to pull away from the Birds in the last stanza with a 21-12 run sparked by Jake Kirby (10). Shane Harrison and Chris Stewart shared scoring honours for the Eagles with 14 each.

Ansett v Tracy Village Jets

Ansett toppled the Tracy Village Jets 78-66 in a close encounter to leap into second place on the ladder. The win was a good one considering the Blues had lost Matt Hunt (16.8ppg) and Ross Vasic (10.4ppg), who have left Darwin to take jobs in Brisbane. The Blues will also loose Daniel Florance (15.6ppg) who is off to Perth to pursue SBL aspirations. A completely different team will now finish off the season. The Blues flew off on a 19-10 run early in this game to create a buffer that the Bombers could not breech. The second and third quarters were played even before the Blues set off on a 21-18 last quarter run to put the game out of reach of the Bombers. Florance led all scorers with a game high 27 in his last game for the Blues and he had help from Jake Feeney (13.2ppg) who hit a season high 20. Tom Hunt also hit double figures for the Blues with 14. Darren Weetra (16.2ppg) led the Bombers with 24 (including 7 treys), Jayden Adams (10.5ppg) chipped in with 12.

Lightning v Palmerston

League leading Lightning blasted Palmerston off the court with a dominant 90-57 win that keeps them two points up on the second place Ansett. The Power was no match for the Lightning who bolted out to a 42-26 half time lead and lifted even more in the second half with a 48-31 run. Five players hit double figures for the Lightning: Craig Martin 26, Thomas Godwin 25 @ 16ppg, Cameron Bailey 14 and Dylan De Santis & Christian Williams 10 each. Bradley Jachmann led the Power with 14.
