Uni Rebels Playing Coach Jaylene Boundry to Bring up 300th DBA Game Against TV Jets

THE occasion could hardly be closer to perfect.

Uni Rebels playing coach Jaylene Boundry will compete in her 300th Darwin Basketball Association game tonight — alongside her sister Edith — against her former club Tracy Village.

The extra ingredient is 25-year-old Boundry’s Rebels inflicted the Jets’ sole League Women loss this season in Round 7, which should make for a blockbuster return bout.

Tracy Village won the clubs’ Round 3 clash by only three points.

“It’s actually a pretty big milestone and I didn’t realise I was about to play 300 until last season,” Boundry said.

“I was actually looking forward to playing my 300th against Jets, but really it’s just another game and I just want the girls to play as normal.”

Boundry’s parents introduced her and Edith, 24, to the sport as nine and eight year olds, respectively, and they fell in love for life.

Edith detoured to Perth for a few years, so is nearing only 150 matches, but Boundry ploughed on and is eight years and three premierships into her Rebels involvement.

The Rebels’ 2008 grand final triumph over Lightning stands out among Boundry’s other on-court memories, including the follow-up 2011 and 2012 successes.

“It was our first grand final with the Rebels and we ended up winning by one point and my sister hit a foul shot to win it,” Boundry said.

“It’s a great club to be a part of. We’ve lost some girls who have gone to different clubs, but I’ll stick around with Rebels for the rest of my basketball career and to coach juniors.

“Seeing them come through into the League team for their first senior game is great.”

Boundry has coached since her late teenage years and established such a strong reputation she was an assistant under Gary Cleeland for the representative under-14 girls’ Cyclones team last month.

Her next focus is scoring a repeat victory tonight over Tracy Village and former Rebels teammates Delsey Ah Wang and Francis Fatnowna.

“If we get the win that’s good on our behalf, but it’s never an easy game,” Boundry said of the Jets showdown.

“I think we’ve still got a long way to go, because most of my girls are still juniors. We’ll make the finals hopefully, so where we go in the finals we’ll see it when it comes.”

The match starts at 6.30pm tonight at Darwin Basketball Stadium just after a short presentation to Boundry to commemorate her milestone.
