League Women – Eagles v Tracy Village Jets

Tracy Village picked up from where they left off last season… with a win. The defending champions Jets knocked off the Eagles 71-43 behind the firepower of newcomer Phoebe Knox and team captain Sam Rioli. Knox hit 26 points and Rioli 19 as the Jets powered away from the Eagles during a 26-10 run in the third quarter. Erin Geer added 13 points and Jodi Tremlett just missed a double with 9. For the Eagles the veteran of the team, Trish Graham, totaled 14 with Molly Althouse chipping in with 7. The Jets are now on another winning streak. This one stands at 9 including this win.

Ansett v Razzle

Ansett edged past the Razzle in the closest women’s game of the night 64-57. This game wasn’t decided until there were only 4 minutes left to play. Razzle trailed 45-42 at the beginning of the last quarter but quickly overtook the Blues to lead 49-47 after just two minutes of play. The lead then changed hands a number of times until Ansett’s Ruta Valiulyte nailed a three pointer to break a 54 all deadlock with 4:42 left to play giving the Blues a three point lead. The Blues kept that lead as the shots failed to drop for the Razzle as time ran out. Tamara Sheppard had a monster game for the Blues hitting a game and league high 33 while Tamiyah Perkins hit 16. Lailani Triffitt & Genelle Bridge put up 12 apiece for the Razzle with Erin Boyd adding 11.

Lightning bolted back from a terrible start to the game to thump the Uni Rebels 44-22. The Lighting trailed the Rebels 7-2 after one quarter of play, but picked up the tempo in the second quarter behind Kira Pendlebury and Grace Morcom who combined for 11pts to take a 17-10 lead at half time. Lightning got on with the job in the second half to outscore the Rebels 27-12 to run away with the game. Pendlebury finished with 15 and Morcom 12 to lead the Lightning while the top scorer for the Rebels was Tulaha Jeffery with 8.

Ladder:              Tracy Village Jets, Ansett & Lightning 1-0, Eagles, Razzle & Uni Rebels 0-1 & Palmerston 0-0

Men

League Men – Lightning v Uni Rebels

The Lightning had a good start to their season as they knocked off last season’s runner-up Uni Rebels 80-73. A huge game from big man Craig Martin proved to be a major factor in the win. Martin hit a game high 35 and had back-up from Cameron Bailey (20) & Dylan De Santis (12). The game was a close affair from the outset with neither side getting much of a break on the other until the last quarter. The Rebels held a 70-67 lead with 6:18 remaining, but did not score a point until Jamie Hamill hit a trey with just 2 seconds left on the clock. Martin stole the game from the Rebels in the last quarter. He hit 15 of his points as the Lightning not only kept the Rebels from scoring for 6 minutes, but outscored them 17-11. Jake Kirby led the Rebels with 30 with help from newcomer JB Pillard who hit 18. Hamill finished with 12 (4 treys).

Eagles v Tracy Village Jets

The Eagles took advantage of the Tracy Village Jets lack of firepower to start their season with an 89-58 win. The Jets had too many long periods of non-scoring that played right into the hands of the Eagles who put up good numbers in every quarter. Joseph Johnson hit a three pointer at the 8 minute mark of the first quarter to give the Eagles a 5-3 lead and they never looked back. The Eagles led 45-27 at half time. Johnson top scored for the game with 30. Support came from Jarrod Sheppard (15), James Smith (12), Reece Turner (11) and Justin McKey (10). Travis Ellis led the Jets with 16 & Henry Bui had 10.

Ansett v Razzle

Ansett ran over, around and through the Razzle by a whopping 94-47. The Blues only led by 3 after the first quarter 21-18, but blew the Razzle away before half time with an 18-6 second quarter blitz. The Blues held a 39-24 lead at the break, but really turned on the offense in the second half as they flew away during a 55-23 run led by Mateo Rowse and Max Davies. Rowse finished the game with a league high 36 while Davies hit 21. More support came from Joseph Stewart (11) and Freddy Webb (10). Nathan Radonich & William Carroll hit 14 each for the Razzle.

Ladder:         Eagles, Lightning & Ansett 1-0, Uni Rebels, Tracy Village Jets & Razzle 0-1 & Palmerston 0-0
