Jillaroos Squad to Tour NZ Announced
Australia’s next generation of female Rugby League talent is set for its tour to New Zealand next month following today’s announcement of the AWRL Jillaroos squad. Respective captains of the Queensland and NSW Women’s State of Origin sides Tahnee Norris and Lisa Fiaola will lead a Jillaroos squad boasting 11 new players. Among them are five players under the age of 19, three of which are completing their HSC exams this year in Ashley Alcorn, Latisha Garry and Sonia Mosie. They will be well lead by Norris who, barring injury will become the most capped player in Australian Women’s Rugby League history at the conclusion of the tour. The Jillaroos will also feature the sisterly combination of East Campbelltown duo Poi and Teina Clarke while a total of 12 Queensland players made the squad following their State of Origin success last month. Jillaroos coach Karen Stuart said the new crop of talent would benefit from the experience of a tour to New Zealand against quality opposition. “They may be young in age but they already show extraordinary talent and maturity beyond their years,” Stuart said of her young squad. “It’s an important tour for us and to take away a young and exciting squad will help us further establish a core group of players to take Australia through to the next World Cup.” The Jillaroos will play a Test match against the NZ Maori side on September 16 before taking part in the Women’s Pacific Cup on September 19/20. They will complete their tour with a Test match against arch rivals the NZ Kiwi Ferns on September 23.
