Coffs Girls Have A Hard Day At The Office

The U14 Girls had a tough time of it in their round of 12 games on Wednesday. They played the Qld State Champions Logan thunder in the morning game and the unbeaten Melbourne Tigers in the afternoon.

The game against Logan Thunder started well with the Suns impressing with good passing and teamwork. The only thing that let them down was they struggled to turn the effort into points with a lot of baskets being missed. The score at quarter time saw the Thunder in front by 1 point 2-3.

The second quarter saw the Suns heavily penalised by a series of fouls which impacted heavily on the game. Logan aided by the 2-12 foul count stretched the lead out to 14 points leading into the half 24-10. In the third, Logan kept the momentum with their tall girls starting to dominate under the basket at both ends. In the  final quarter the Suns made a gallant effort to compete right to the last whistle and can be proud of the way they handled a very difficult game. The Suns talls in Rani Lowry, Sarah Wilmott and Rebecca Black all played well and battled hard against their taller opposition especially in defence.

In the second game the Melbourne Tigers started at a fierce pace moving the ball at lightning speed down the court and employing a very intimidating trap on our guards. In contrast to the Logan game the first quarter saw 43 points scored with Tigers taking a 33-10 lead. At this stage it seemed that the Suns were in for a demoralising loss, but in true Suns team spirit the girls rallied strongly to stay competitive in all aspects of the game. Lizzy Laurie played right out of her weight division and was a real favourite in front of an appreciative crowd. Liz Tonks, Jordi Woods, Scout Bourke and Tessa Croxton played with courage and flair and Kiara Furner and Ellie Hewitt took the role of impact players, coming on and doing well in both defence and attack. In the end the 88-55 scoreline was quite a positive result with most spectators marking in the Tigers as strong favourites for the title.

Thursday was a day off for the girls and the highlights included a freezing frolic in the snow on the top of Mount Wellington and for some a trip to Port Arthur. Today the girls play Forestville in an attempt to get into the playoff for 9/10 position.
