Coffs Top Ten

The U14 Girls have assured themselves of a top 10 finish at the U14 National Club Championships in Hobart by recording a strong 41-34 repeat win over South Australian team Forestville. Tomorrow they will play the North Adelaide Rockets to determine 9th and 10th placings.

The Suns went into the game against Forestville having already defeated that team on the first day of competition. Although the win was comprehensive there was no room for complacency as the team knew Forestville would turn up with a score to settle. However, our girls were equally determined to come away with a victory which would be just as sweet as their visit to the Cadbury factory earlier in the day.

The first quarter was a tight affair with only a point separating the teams. Our starting 5 were putting a lot of pressure on the Eagles in both defence and attack. This pressure was taking its toll on the Queensland team and our bench players relished the chance to drive home a small but decisive advantage by half time. In the 3rd quarter, coach les Gough employed a full court press which really opened up the game and paid dividends as the Suns forced some crucial turn overs and turned these into points.Coffs took an 11 point advantage into the 4th quarter, but Forestville came back hard in the early minutes scoring 6 unanswered points. Fortunately the Coffs girls regrouped and safely held their opposition until the final whistle. It was a great 'team' win with every player playing with lots of determination and skill often disregarding pain and injury to ensure a memorable victory.
