Suns Perform at Gosford Classic

Coffs Suns Gosford Classic Results

The weekend saw 3 suns rep teams head down to Gosford for the pre-season Classic held at 6 different stadiums across the city. Our teams all went down with different agendas; The 18 Men were trying to qualify for the Country Premier League for the season whilst the two Under 14's teams wanted to assess where they were at for the season.

The 18 Men managed to achieve their goal and qualify for the CPL competition. They started off strongly defeating Port Macquarie 58-42 and on Sunday morning took on Tamworth bright and early at 8am. The boys battled with Tamworth in a back and forth game that was very entertaining to watch. The suns eventually coming away victors 55-46. This saw our team crossover against Shoalhaven for a spot in CPL and the boys managed to get over the line easily 76-53, before losing to The Western Reds in the Semi-final. This was a fantastic achievement by our boys, making it to the top 4 of what was a very strong competition.

The under 14 Women travelled down with intentions to develop and get grow over the weekend. The girls being predominantly bottom age meant that some of the Metro sides would be far bigger and stronger than the girls. Coach Michelle Walker was thrilled with the girls weekend and although they didn't come away with many wins on the board they improved drastically throughout the weekend. They learnt a lot about their competition and made evident the areas needing attention for the girls. Their fight and determination over the weekend was outstanding and never gave an inch to any of their competitors easily, matter how big or strong. The girls are excited about the season ahead and are looking forward to getting back into training.

The Under 14 Men were the surprise packet of the weekend. The boys headed down to try and get a gauge where they sat for the season and they have put themselves in a great position. They started off slowly against the Sydney Comets going down by 11, but with a last second buzzer beater from Ash Schellenberger managed to get the win over Norths Bears and advance to the Qualifying final on Sunday morning. Here they played Newcastle and comfortably beat them by 18 points before rolling over Hornsby Spiders in the semi by 20+ points. The boys had the Spiders by 18-4 at quarter time and never looked back. This booked them a spot in the Grand final against the Hills Hornets where the boys gave everything they had left to lead the game at 3/4 time. The last quarter was unfortunately an all Hills quarter and saw the boys lose by 9 points. Coach Blake Kelly was very happy an surprised with the weekend and is confident this puts the boys in a fantastic position coming into the first round of CPL.

Congratulations to all players, coaches and managers who attended this carnival and represented the club so well. Good luck to the sides travelling to the Gosford Classic Div. 2 this weekend!
