One of Coffs Harbour's most talented young referees, Mattison Devine, has returned to the court after a year away from the game. Mattison will join Georgie Hewitt and Chelsea Kewming as the CHBA representative referees this weekend for the Country Premier League games. It is great to have Matt back, especially younger referees who can learn so much from watching him officiate.
Training camps for referees and score bench officials were held recently, building the capacity of the ‘behind the court’ teams for Coffs Basketball. Sandra Mottram, Justin Baldwin & Chelsea Kewming led the referees course which saw 35 participants taking their first step towards becoming an accredited official. On the same weekend over 20 parents attended accreditation courses in scoretable.

Players from across the region participated in the Waratah Camps, with the best players from this camp being named to go through to the State U/13 All Star camp and the U14 & 15 Talented Athlete program.
Coffs' first under 20 female State player, Jessi Reeves, has returned from the recent Australian Championships with a bronze medal. At the U20 level, Basketball NSW enters just one team, a combined metropolitan and country team, so Jessi’s selection alone was an outstanding feat. Jessi played good minutes and contributed to the scoring in most games, with a personal best 14 points against ACT.

On Saturday, there were a couple of instances of coaches/parents/supporters abusing our junior referees.
All coaches, parents and supporters need to be aware that our Saturday morning referees are all learning and do not need people yelling and making disparaging comments to them. We at CHBA follow the zero tolerance stance.
From all reports, the referees didn’t take the upsetting comments made on board, however, they were still out of line and uncalled for.
Junior referees are going to miss things, however, they all do their best.
Please refrain from making abusive comments to the referees and make sure you encourage the children and players to do their 3 cheers for the referees regardless of your feelings towards them. We are here for fun, not sheep stations.
If you feel that there is something we can do better in teaching our junior referees, please feel free to contact our office or our court supervisor to discuss this. We are always open to assistance, just not abuse.
