Big Wins at Basketball NSW Awards Night

Scooping the Best Referees Program in NSW is a fitting reward for the hours of volunteer time Sandra Mottram, Justin Baldwin and Sarah Mottram have put into the program.  Without doubt, the feature of the Coffs program is the willingness of our senior referees to educate young referees and help them achieve their officiating dreams.  This commitment to sharing knowledge and experience has shaped our current positive approach to refereeing.

BNSW recognised that Coffs Basketball has created a clear pathway for referee advancement from “L” plate referees in the Saturday competition, to domestic senior games, to NJL and State league representative games and then through to Country, State and National Championships.  Over the past few years Coffs whistle-blowers have featured at Basketball Australia and Schools National Championships, while at the other end of the referee chain, over 30 young referees are currently in the first stage of their officiating career. I know many parents and referees in the association will be delighted for Sandra and Sarah, both of whom have given so much time and effort to those people keen to pursue refereeing.

The George Thompson Memorial Award recognises outstanding contribution to women’s basketball.  In winning the 2009 Award, Basketball NSW recognised that Coffs Harbour has a strong and positive women’s influence running through all sections of the association – that is, in coaching, administration, refereeing, playing numbers and representative success.

In 2009 our female representative teams won every division 1 title in the north from under 12’s through to senior women; we have more female domestic teams than men’s teams; we have a high number of female representative coaches, women and girls dominate our referees program, our number of girls selected at the elite end of representation outstripped our male numbers, and the Committee of Management consists of a majority of women.  Coffs Harbour won this award ahead of other nominees, Newcastle, Penrith and Bathurst Basketball Associations.
