Odd Age Carnival At Port Macquarie

Below are the game reports sent through from the coaching staff.

Under 11 men - Port Macquarie Mission
Coffs Harbour's under 11 men kept their odd age winning streak alive as they moved through the Port Macquarie Seaside Classic largely unchallenged.

The Geoff McCann coached Coffs Red dominated Saturday's round games defeating Tamworth Blue 67-12, Port Macquarie 66-12, Coffs Black 39-32 and Tamworth 59-31. Then on Sunday they backed up their impressive performance beating a gallant Cessnock 66-11 to move into the final as heavy favourites.

Coffs Black weren't quite as dominant in their quest for the final. After a convincing 68-17 win over Cessnock they struggled to beat Tamworth Blue, lost to Coffs Red and had a tie with Port Macquarie. This meant a win on Sunday morning was required to move them further into the tournament. Facing a hungry Tamworth outfit, the boys came out and led from start to finish, recording a 66-27 win.

Sunday afternoon's Grand Final saw another fantastic battle between the two Coffs Harbour sides. Utilising their massive height advantage, Coffs Red skipped away to an early 14 point lead and many thought the game was as good as gone. But Black changed the tone of the game employing a ferocious full court defensive assault and leveled the scores with just over a minute to go. As the final seconds ticked by, both teams had ample opportunity to claim victory but it was Red's supreme free throw shooting which made all the difference coming away 36-32 winners.

Under 13 Men Fantastic!
Laurie Van Loo sends her apologies for the brief report, but she left Port and drove straight to Young.  We thank her for her contribution under these circumstances.  Coffs Harbour sent two even teams to Port Macquarie, and as the draw would have it, we played each other in our first game.  Showing just how even the teams were, the result was 42 all at full time.

The teams won every other game comfortably, except against Port Macquarie. Coffs Black team lost in a close game in the last minute to Port Macquarie, while the Coffs Red team won the round game to Port by 2 points.

Coffs red went through to play Port Macquarie in the grand final and all though I was not there a text message said fantastic game every one scored and Coffs Red defeated Port Macquarie 40 to 42.

Under 17 Men:
Coffs U17 men had two very competitive teams travel to Port. Both teams played good basketball with some good combinations, notably Sam Wallace, Matt France and Simon Cross for Coffs Red and Petnoy Wonisch, Jarrod Austin and Chris Tonks for Coffs Black.

Both teams had good wins in the round games over both Tamworth teams and the Cessnock Cobras.

The round game between the Coffs teams was a great game that saw a three point win to the Red team.  Guards from both teams Connor Maguire, Phillip Hudson, Jarrod Markham, Ben Slater and big men Luke McGinniskin, Travis Slater and Ben Roughan had good games, playing good defence and creating plenty of scoring opportunities for their sides.

The final between the two Coffs teams was again a torrid affair with Matt Devine, Jacob Watts and Nathaniel James creating opportunities with shear speed, Quentin Amos tried hard all weekend and was rewarded with some points.

The fact that only a combined total of 8 points separated the two teams in these games and both teams had comfortable wins in their round games against good opposition shows the quality of player these young men are. Thanks to the parents, managers and Greg McGinniskin for a very enjoyable weekend.

Under 11 Girls:
The Under 11 girls had two very competition teams also, and like other divisions came home with a run of victories.

Coach David Steele's Black team accounted for Maitland Mustangs first game with a 51 points to 2 victory and then followed up with a 53-6 win over Tamworth Thunderbolts and a 64-15 result against Cessnock Cobras.Coach Julie Black directed her Red team through victories against Port Macquarie 72-8, Tamworth Blue 45-2 and Lismore Lakers 44-19.

The two Coffs Harbour teams met in the grand final and entertained the spectator crowd with an exciting game of basket for basket exchanges and physical intensity at the defensive end of the court.

The Red team girls kicked away to an early 6 point lead and managed to hold that margin for the duration of the game while the Black team girls played frustrating catch-up basketball as their many scoring opportunities were spoilt by missed shots and determined defence. At the final buzzer it was the Red team still 6 points in front taking the trophies with a well-earned 30 points to 24 win but there were no losers on the court with all twenty of the Coffs Harbour girls giving their team and their association a 100% effort.

Under 13 Girls:
In the preliminary rounds both Coffs teams had comfortable victories over Port Macquarie, Cessnock, Tamworth and Tamworth Blue. Coffs Red secured the win in a closely contested game over Coffs Blacksetting up a fierce battle in the carnival final.

In the final neither team could break away. Coffs Red led by one at the half but had some foul trouble. In a seesawing battle over the closing minutes of regulation time Coffs Black dug deep to level the score at the final siren. In the three minutes of extra time Coffs Black took a narrow early lead to hold on and win 41 to 38.

Best for Coffs Black were Jess Reeves, Kristy Wallace, Bianca Oberleuter and Annabel Tonks while for the runners up Billie Bourke, Sam Bastic, Jessica Longhurst and Jayden Ainsworth had strong games.
