Like a 10-1 shot motoring down the home straight in the Melbourne Cup, Cairns Saints look like they have timed their run to perfection.
The reigning AFL Cairns premiers won through to their third successive grand final on Saturday with a 20.15 (135) to 11.5 (71) victory over Centrals Trinity Beach at Cazalys.
Waiting for them in this week’s decider is last year’s runner-up and 2009 minor premiers South Cairns.
Saints player-coach Mark Kennedy is one man eager to resume hostilities.
"I reckon they (Souths) would have been here today looking at that and seeing Cairns Saints are hanging about and are back again," Kennedy said.
"We’ve come from nowhere really this year and have sparked at the right time."
While cloud cover ensured a cool day on Saturday, there was nothing forgiving about the body contact as both teams tried to gain the physical ascendancy in the opening term.
Running against a strong wind, Saints were outstanding and took a five-point lead into quarter-time.
