The AFL Queensland Country Under 18 Championships are still three months away but Cairns Lions coach Eddie Skiba does not want to leave anything to chance.
As part of the squad's summer development program, the Lions took on a team of Cairns masters footballers at Watsons Oval yesterday.
Skiba said his players were keen for a run after three weeks of solid training. "It's earlier than when we would normally play a game but it's a bit of a carrot for the boys," he said. "They'd rather be out there playing footy instead of always in the gym or running. We have a few new guys in the group and I wanted to see how they attacked the ball and where the other guy's fitness was at."
