The 2010 AFL Cairns fixture has now been finalised, with the home and away season commencing on Saturday, 27th March 2010 with a superb line up of matches to kick the year off, including a twilight match at Cazalys Stadium between Manunda Hawks and reigning Premiers Cairns Saints. The twilight match will see the Seniors starting at 5:00pm rather than the usually 3:00pm.
In releasing the 21-round draw,AFL Cairns Operations Manager Melissa Dunstan, said it was a fixture reflecting what the clubs wanted.
“It’s a challenge to accommodate the requests of all clubs and to ensure they have regular home games as this is where much of their operating income is derived. We are also mindful of travel, particularly for the Crocs, being based in Port Douglas, but we couldn’t be happier with the outcome, especially with the changes like a Friday night match and some Sunday football” she said.
Round 3 will see Cairns Saints unfurl their Premiership flag at Griffiths Park
with their first home game of the season and a replay of the 2009 Grand Final when they meet with South Cairns.
North Cairns and South Cairns will again clash on the Anzac Day weekend - something that has now become a tradition for the two clubs. They will play their Round 4 encounter on Sunday, 25th April 2010 with a
large crowd expected at Watsons Oval with all other matches for the round being contested on the Saturday.
2010 will see Friday night football at Cazalys Stadium, with Manunda Hawks hosting North Cairns at Cazalys Stadium
in Round 14.
In another significant change, all games in Round 15 will be played on Sunday, 18th
July 2010 due to the VFL game between Gold Coast and Bendigo Bombers being played in Cairns
on Saturday, 17th July 2010.
A general Bye will occur over the Easter weekend and again for the Queens Birthday Weekend, with the AFL Cairns Senior Representative Team traveling to Brisbane
to take on the Queensland Country Stockman in the final selection match for the Queensland Country Team to compete at the Australian Country Championships in Canberra
in July.
The 2010 season culminates with a top-four finals series at Cazalys Stadium over the first 3 Saturday’s in September.
