Conditions were wet and muddy at the AFL Queensland Country Championships in Rockhampton on Saturday but seven Cairns Lions under -18 footballers were given reasons to smile.
Luke Chitty, John Avison , Sam Michael, Jye Bohm, Tim Hanly, Harry Hutchison and Jackson Brown were selected in the Queensland Country Kookaburras squad for this months state championships.
It was a solid representation from the Lions, considering they lost both their games at the day-long championships.
The Lions went down to Central Queensland Country 2.1 (13) to 1.3 (9) first up, before losing 2.9 (21) 2.2 (14) in their clash against South Queensland Country.
Lions coach Eddie Skiba said the monsoonal weather made life difficult for all players
“There wasn’t any clean running footy but what it did show us was the courage of all players” he said.
While satisfied with the number of Lions in the kookaburras squad, Skiba said a couple of his players were unlucky.
“You’ll always want more. I think we had eight or nine last year but this year we still had more than any of the other regions when you break it down” he said.
