The U18 Queensland Kookaburras shocked the Gold Coast Stingrays at Southport on Friday night in their round 2 clash at the U18 Queensland State Championships after a five goal in five minutes burst saw the Kookaburras go from trailing by 11 points to leading by 14 when the final bell rang.
Gold Coast appeared to have the game under control despite leading by just 10 points at halftime and four points at the last change but the Kookaburras grit kept them in striking distance for the entire journey.
In wet and blustery conditions the Kookaburras will to compete and pressure their opponents meant the Stingrays could not find the breathing space the kill off the country boys. On the contrary it was actually the Kookaburras who were able to outlast and break the much fancied Gold Coast team.
For the Kookaburras Billy Moorhead and Nat Congoo lead the way while Sam Michael and Jye Bohm were the pick of the Cairns connection.
“Overall it was a pleasing effort as the boys had to adjust to the conditions and play some ugly and determined footy to get themselves over the line”
The Kookaburras now meet the Western Taipans on Wednesday night to try and earn themselves a place in the grand final against the South East Bushrangers.
