There is a new footy playing philosophy up at Holloways Beach and it is all about the rigours and rewards of patience.
The Cobras want nothing more than to become top four contenders in the AFL Cairns this season and are prepared to work for gradual improvement in an effort to sustain it through to September.
Early signs are promising for the battlers of seasons past.
Bolstered by the arrival of new recruits, the Cobras beat South Cairns by 25 points in round one and tomorrow travel to Watsons Oval for a clash against North Cairns.
Cobras joint coach Troy McGuane, who was in charge of the Tigers before heading to Holloways last season, said a first-up win was a good start.
“Our guys performed OK but we must see large amount of improvements,” he said.
“I thought our overall form was average in round 1. We had a lot of forward entries and kicked 8-19 with a number of wasted opportunities. We know we have to improve.”
Key to that development, according to McGuane, is for players to have patience and faith in the structures the club has implemented.
“We are not focusing on gradual improvement throughout the year and really are taking it a game at a time ,” he said.
“We are not focusing on what happens at the end of the year. Instead, we are looking to improve each training session.
“We will have all our recruits available soon, so our main aim is to have a side that sees improvement in some key areas and it will take time for us to get to where we need to be.”
Improvement will also be a buzz word at the Tigers. After making the pre-season final, Brett Oakley’s men went down to Centrals Trinity Beach by 34 points in the first round.
In other games tomorrow, last start winners Centrals and the Manunda Hawks clash at Crathern Oval. And South Cairns host Port Douglas at Fretwell Park. All games start at 3pm.
