THE Manunda Hawks showed an ominous blend of mettle and class on Saturday to beat a gutsy Cairns City Cobras by 33 points in their round-three AFL Cairns clash at Cazalys.
While the final score of 15.12 (102) to 11.3 (69) could be categorised as "convincing", Hawks coach Paul Griffiths might be tempted to file it under "made to work for it".
With Cobras struggling to hit targets in the first two quarters, Hawks appeared in control of the contest and led by 21 points at the main break.
But Cobras came out and proved last week's stirring comeback against North Cairns was no fluke. The Holloways Beach natives kicked the first three majors of the third-term with Jake Briggs’ effort on the run the key momentum shifter.
Hawks rallied to stay in front most of the quarter but a goal after the siren gave Cobras the lead for the first time.
When Matt White kicked truly soon after the restart, Cobras looked set to ride a wave of momentum to what would have been the club’s best win in two seasons.
