AFL Cairns umpires boss Ray Hocking will blow his last whistle in the Far North next month after accepting a new position in Canberra.
Hocking, who has been in Cairns for just over three years, will umpire his final match on May 15 before beginning his new role as general manager of ACT AFL club the Belconnen Magpies.
After starting his umpiring career in 1983 in Melbourne following a career-ending knee injury, Hocking expects it will be hard adjusting to life in the stands on game day.
"I’m pretty sad about it," he said.
"I’ve been umpiring for a long time and this new challenge I’m taking on won’t allow me the time to do it.
