IT is not even May but Cairns Saints are already showing signs it will take a special effort to deny them a third straight AFL Cairns premiership.
Saints made the biggest statement of their title defence so far on Saturday, beating premiership contender Centrals Trinity Beach 13.15 (93) to 7.10 (52) at Crathern Oval.
While a second-quarter downpour and greasy conditions prevented a free-flowing spectacle, no amount of rain could dampen Saints’ desire to win the contest.
Saints forward Matt Walsh said establishing early dominance was important against the Bulldogs.
"We sort of took control early and were able to keep that three-to-four goal buffer for the entire game," he said.
"It wasn’t the best of conditions but part of our plan was to keep the pressure on them the whole game.
