Three Cairns footballers have made the Queensland under 16 AFL squad after starring for the Country Kookaburras during the state titles in Brisbane this month.
Key-position players Jermaine Wardle (Hawks), Frazer Eaton (Port Douglas) and midfielder Lachlan Pearson (Centrals) cracked the 30 man squad along with two other Kookaburras’ footballers.
Wardle and Pearson are no strangers to the representative scene. Both playing made both Queensland under 15 school team last year while Eaton can make his state debut less than a year after taking up the sport.
AFL Cairns development manager Eddie Skiba said all three players did well to make the squad.
“I think Lachie and Jermaine would’ve had this team in their sights after making the under-15s,” he said. “And Frazer would’ve been hoping to get in here as well.”
The Queensland squad will play a series of practice matches before the final 25 man side for July’s AFL National Under-16 Championships in Sydney is named.
