Cairns City Cobras might keep some of the city’s physios busy for the next week after their torrid encounter with Souths at Fretwell Park on Saturday.
Cobras beat the AFL Cairns bottom-placed team 18.17 (125) to 15.19 (99) after leading by eight goals at quarter time.
While happy to score their first win in more than a month, Cobras look to have paid a high price for the four competition points.
The Holloways beach natives finished the match with only 17 fit players, with Dan McGraths knee injury shaping as the most serious concern.
Cobras joint head coach Troy McGuane said it was a testing afternoon for his club.
“The injuries affected our rotation a lot but we are also relaxed a bit after we got that good buffer,” he said.
“We’re trying to get the boys to move a lot quicker and we did that in the first quarter but then went away from it in the second, third and fourth and started mucking around with it a bit.
“We got a bit slack and Souths, to their credit, picked up on it and got within four or five goals of us in the end.”
Souths president Lance Dixon was proud of the fight that his side showed after their disastrous first quarter and hoped a win was not too far away.
“We’ve still got ambitions to win three, four or even five games this season,” he said. “We’re starting to come together.”
“We’ve got a lot of players coming back who weren’t here earlier in the season and we expect we’ll be quite competitive.”

After an inaccurate first term, the bulldogs booted eight goals in the second quarter to set up their 22.13 (145) to 12.8 (80) victory.
Ben James and Michael Hunter kicked five each for the bulldogs. Reagan Kyle finished with four for the Tigers.
