IT was a grind long and hard enough to carve a trench through the middle of Crathern Oval, but Centrals Trinity Beach were happy to shelve flair in Saturday's win against Cairns Saints.
The Bulldogs beat the reigning
AFL Cairns premiers 13.18 (96) to 11.11 (77) in a performance that emphasised the club’s values of grit and
determination.
Both sides went into the clash under-strength and were forced to dip into their reserve grade and under-18 squads to field teams.
From the first term it was clear scores were going to be close all day with neither side able to establish any dominance for longer than 10 minutes.
Scores were level at quarter-time and the Bulldogs only led by five points at the main break.
With older brother Matt out, Josh Walsh started at full-forward for the Saints and finished the afternoon with three goals after a willing battle with the Bulldogs defence.
A tricky breeze meant it was never going to an afternoon for soaring 50m drop punts, with both teams’ forward lines forced to scrap for every point.
