That is the message from AFL Cairns president Gary Young as tickets go on sale today for the VFL clash between the Gold Coast and Bendigo Bombers at Cazalys on July 17th. AFL Cairns long term goal is to bring a regular season AFL fixture to Cairns and Young believes a big crowd to the VFL match will send the right message to southern officials. “This game means a lot to us about building relationships for future seasons,” he said. “We’re hopeful in the next couple of years to get a real season AFL game up here and games like this are a chance to prove ourselves. “I would like to think that people want to see a high level of football. It’s a step up form what we have locally. “If we don’t get a good crowd the why would AFL want to put their heads on a chopping blockand move a game up here?” Young hopes for a crowd of 3000 and knows the on field presence of Karmichael Hunt will have a bearing of attendance. While it hasn’t been confirmed if Hunt will play, the Gold Coast also features Far North products Charlie Dixon, Rex Liddy and Lewis Moss. Young said the league wants to build a strong relationship with Gold Coast. “If we only get 1000 people turn up they might think, “Gee, is this where we want to be playing our games?” he said. “But if we get 3000 or more, they might think, “Wow” “We need to be exciting all these people down south so they want to be intrinsically involved with our league.”
Ticket prices for the Gold Coast v Bendigo Bombers clash are $11 for adult general admission, $15 for a reserved seating in the upper grandstand seating, while children under-15 in the general admission area enter for free.
