AFL Cairns president Gary Young owes Gordon Dixon a carton or six for the big crowd that will likely turn up to watch Gold Coast play the Bendigo Bombers at Cazalys on Saturday.
AFL Cairns vice-president Dixon, whose son Charlie plays for the Gold Coast, helped persuade Gold Coast coach Guy McKenna to give high-profile recruit Karmichael Hunt game time after originally planning to rest the former rugby league star.
Hunt has helped draw huge crowds to the three VFL matches he has played in and Young hopes Cairns also catches a case of "Huntmania".
Young said ticket sales for the match had been OK but that a surge in interest was expected as word spread that Hunt would be playing.
"I think the roll-up on the day will be significant and I’m expecting we’ll get over 3000," he said.
"That’s in line with what they would’ve expected if they were in Victoria. They normally get 2000 to a VFL game but with Karmichael playing they’ve been getting 4000 to 5000 people.
"Some will come to cheer him and some will probably come to boo him as well but they’ll all be interested to see how he goes."
