I was very happy to hear the other week that federal Treasurer Wayne Swann has pledged 3 million to help redevelop Cazalys.
A lot of people might wonder why the AFL gets all the money but I think that is a shallow view.
If you take a step back and have a look at it objectively you’ll see there would be huge advantages for Cairns if Cazalys was redeveloped.
It’s not just AFL fans who would benefit. There is not a doubt in my mind that if Cazalys facilities were upgraded that the AFL would start playing home to home and away fixtures on the ground.
That brings teams, their supporter and their money into the city.
Cazalys has also hosted international cricket matches before and I’m sire the other football codes would make use of the ground as well.
Cazalys has the potential to be a top-class venue for all sorts of entertainment.
The best thing about the ground is the playing surface and that’s one area where it triumphs a few of the bigger stadiums down south.
It’s truly first class and that’s normally the hardest thing to get right.
