IF Leigh Marriott has his way, Port Douglas will take home more than one AFL Cairns premiership trophy from Cazalys on Saturday.
The Crocs reserve grade player-coach and his teammates will make a title stand two-and-a-half hours before their senior counterparts when they run on for their grand final against North Cairns.
Marriott’s side qualified for the season decider with a 10-point victory over Cairns Saints in the first semi-final and used the week’s break to freshen up their bodies.
Three days ahead of the biggest game of the year, Marriott said his team wanted to inspire the Crocs’ senior players.
"We want to play well and give the first team a bit of confidence and hopefully we can bring both cups back to Port Douglas," he said.
One of the Crocs’ greatest strengths has been their depth. Few senior teams have experienced as many pleasant selection headaches, with Marriott’s side often reaping the benefits.
"The club recruited really well this year," he said. "The players that have come in have really done the job, as well as the blokes already there."
North Cairns, boosted by the reserve grade medal to Dean Uebergang on Monday night, have had to rely on old hands to make the grand final.
A lack of work opportunities in the Far North saw many clubs struggle on the recruitment front this year.
